Doom Metal

Doom metal is an extreme form of heavy metal music that typically uses slower tempos, low-tuned guitars and a much 'thicker' or 'heavier' sound than other metal genres. Both the music and the lyrics intend to evoke a sense of despair, dread, and impending doom. The genre is strongly influenced by the early work of Black Sabbath, who formed a prototype for doom metal with songs such as "Black Sabbath" and "Into the Void". During the first half of the 1980s, a number of bands from England (Pagan Altar, Witchfinder General) and the United States (Pentagram, Saint Vitus, Trouble) defined doom metal as a distinct genre.

SCEPTICAL SCHIZO The Plight

EP · 1993 · Death-Doom Metal

UMUR
"The Plight" is an EP release by Finnish death-doom metal (previously thrash metal) act Sceptical Schizo. The EP was released through Wounded Love Records in January 1993. It´s the successor to the June 1992 "Into the Suction of Blue / Withdrawn" EP. Sceptical Schizo formed in 1988 under the Epidemic monicker but changed their name to Sceptical Schizo later the same year. They operated under the Sceptical Schizo band name until 1993 when they changed their name to Lavra. They didn´t manage to release a full-length studio album during the 1988-1993 period, but they were still relatively active releasing no less than four demos and two EPs. "The Plight" was their last release prior to changing their name to Lavra and it´s the only Sceptical Schizo release which was put out through a label during their original run.

"The Plight" features 2 tracks and a total playing time of 15:10 minutes. The music is slow, heavy, and melancholic death-doom metal but with the occassional slow death-n´roll touch (and even a nod or two towards funeral doom metal). Sceptical Schizo occasionally show a slightly more experimental/avant-garde edge, but "The Plight" is generally a more "normal" death-doom metal release compared to the highly experimental "Into the Suction of Blue / Withdrawn" EP. The sound production is raw and unpolished but it´s still the best quality sound production on any of the Sceptical Schizo releases from the 1988-1993 period.

How a relatively mediocre brutal thrash metal act turned into a creative and intriguing experimental death-doom metal act over the course of a few years is beyond me, but Sceptical Schizo must have taken a conscious choice during the early 90s death metal explosion and decided to jump the thrash metal ship and play a completely different music style. There´s nothing connecting the four demos with the two EPs Sceptical Schizo released after them, and it could well have been two completely different bands playing. "The Plight" is a good quality death-doom metal release and with the unusual songwriting ideas which Sceptical Schizo incorporate I´d even say that it´s a relatively unique release. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.

SCEPTICAL SCHIZO Into the Suction of Blue / Withdrawn

UMUR
"Into the Suction of Blue / Withdrawn" is an EP release by Finnish thrash/death metal act Sceptical Schizo. The EP was independently released in June 1992 and follows the release of no less than four demo recordings which were released in the years 1989-1991. Sceptical Schizo formed in 1988 under the Epidemic monicker but changed their name to Sceptical Schizo later the same year. They operated under the Sceptical Schizo band name until 1993 when they changed their name to Lavra.

The four demos preceding this 2 tracks, 11:50 minutes long EP were all in a brutal thrash metal style, but the last two demos "Danse Macabre" (August 1990) and especially "The Four Seasons" (February 1991) saw Sceptical Schizo experiment with their sound and it was audible that the band were on a musical journey which was far from over. Listening to "Into the Suction of Blue / Withdrawn" that becomes even more clear, because Sceptical Schizo are now no longer playing thrash metal but instead perform a weird and experimental/avant-garde death-doom metal style (some sections of "Withdrawn" can even be labelled funeral doom metal and there´s a slow and heavy death´n´roll touch here and there too) with both growling vocals and some murky gothic type male clean vocals. I´m honestly not sure how to describe this correctly, but it´s certainly both odd and unconventional (the use of clarinet and keyboards are quite unusual in the way they are used here). Maybe a band like the French in Supuration/SUP is a valid reference, but this is actually pretty unique for the time.

The sound production is decent but also unpolished and a bit murky. It´s suits the aestethics of the music pretty well though. "Into the Suction of Blue / Withdrawn" has come as a complete surprise to me after listening to Sceptical Schizo´s demos. Nothing on those demos (even though the last two did feature a more experimnetal edge) could have prepared me for what "Into the Suction of Blue / Withdrawn" contains. I´m confused but in a good way and the odd avant-garde death-doom metal style of "Into the Suction of Blue / Withdrawn" is certainly more interesting and accomplished than anything Sceptical Schizo had put out before. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.

VALHALL Moonstoned

Album · 1995 · Doom Metal

UMUR
"Moonstoned" is the debut full-length studio album by Norwegian doom metal act Valhall. The album was released through Head Not Found in February 1995. Valhall formed in 1987 and originally featured Gylve Nagell (aka Fenriz from Darkthrone) on drums on their first two demos (and on some tracks on their third demo). Nagell is however not part of the lineup on "Moonstoned" and actually hadn´t been involved with Valhall since 1990. Valhall started out playing a hybrid death, black, thrash, doom metal style but when they released their third demo "Trauma" in April 1990, they played a more pure death-doom metal style.

On "Moonstoned" none of the band´s extreme metal past is heard though, and the listener is instead treated to a more traditional doom metal style with a clean vocalist in front. It´s actually still Ronny Sorkness singing, who has been Valhall´s lead vocalist since day one, so he has just left the extreme metal snarling vocals behind and opted for a more "normal" vocal style. Stylistically the music on "Moonstoned" is similar to what an artist like Trouble did in the late 80s/early 90s, so there´s the occasional stoner doom metal touch to the band´s heavy doom metal style (Black Sabbath is of course also an influence).

Valhall are a well playing band but while Sorkness is a decent vocalist who gets the job done, he doesn´t have a particularliy distinct sounding voice and the vocals are a weak link of the album. The sound production is another...it simply sounds thin and lacks the heavy organic bottom end which this type of music is so dependent on. The songwriting is actually pretty decent and fairly memorable, but with the other issues "Moonstoned" isn´t a perfect release by any means. A 3 star (60%) rating is still warranted though.

VALHALL Pagan Token

Demo · 1991 · Death-Doom Metal

UMUR
"Pagan Token" is the fifth demo release by Norwegian death/black/thrash/doom metal act Valhall. The demo was independently released in March 1991. It succeeds the "Live Demo 91" which was released earlier the same year. Opening track "Melting Picture" had already been released on "Live Demo 91" and the same with "Painful Solitute", although they of course appear here in studio versions. The latter was also on the tracklist of the April 1990 "Trauma" demo. Other than those two tracks "Pagan Token" features "Versatility" and "Moribund Penisual".

Compared to "Trauma", this demo has a more homemade feel to it and it´s not nearly as well produced. "Pagan Token" features more of a rehearsal space recording quality. Stylistically Valhall had reached a point where they played a death-doom metal style which isn´t terribly different from the sound of the first Paradise Lost album. It´s slow (although occasionally faster-paced), sorrowfilled, and doomy death metal with a raw shouting/growling vocalist in front.

Coming from a good quality demo like "Trauma" to this is a bit of a disappointment. It´s not a bad quality death-doom metal release, but it´s not a particularly great one either. It sometimes sounds almost too stripped and it feels like there are empty spaces in the music where little is happening. It´s too bad because I felt Valhall was on to something with the "Trauma" demo but it appears to have been a one-of. A 2 - 2.5 star (45%) rating is warranted.

VALHALL Live Demo 91

Demo · 1991 · Doom Metal
Cover art Buy this album from MMA partners
UMUR
"Live Demo 91" is the fourth demo recording by death/black/thrash/doom metal act Valhall. The demo was independently released in early 1991. It was recorded live at the Bootleg venue in November 1990. The demo features three tracks. "Melting Picture" would appear on the forthcoming fifth demo recording by Valhall the March 1991 "Pagan Token" demo. "The Mission" is exclusive to this live demo and "Painful Solitude" had already appeared on the April 1990 "Trauma" demo, but would also appear on the "Pagan Token" demo.

At this point Valhall played a death-doom metal style which isn´t far removed from the first Paradise Lost album. It´s slow, brutal, and sorrowfilled death metal with a brutal shouting/growling vocalist in front. Although the drums are barely audible in the mix, it´s still a relatively decent quality live production and the songs are easy to decipher and listen to. It´s by no means a masterpiece live demo but it´s overall a decent quality release and a 2.5 star (50%) rating is warranted.

PARADISE LOST Live Death

Movie · 2004 · Death-Doom Metal

Considering this was actually released on VHS in 1990, Paradise Lost must surely overestimate the passion and loyalty of their fan club. Filmed in Bradford in 1989 to coincide with the band’s debut album, this is a 30-minute video of the band playing on stage. They barely move around, you barely see glimpses of the crowd, and in fact, you barely see vocalist Nick Holmes’ face due to his shaggy hair constantly covering it.

I’m not really a fan of their earlier, death metal growly material anyway, but even if I was, this video isn’t enjoyable or interesting to watch at all. Re-released in 2004 on DVD, this isn’t worth the 50p I spent on it if not for the fact that I do, in fact, actually like this band, and have a compulsive obsession to own everything a band puts out.
