"Aggressions" is an EP release by Finnish thrash metal act Sceptical Schizo. The EP was independently released in May 2019. It´s the successor to "The Plight" EP from January 1993, so there´s obviously been a long break in activity since the release of "The Plight". Sceptical Schizo formed in 1988 under the Epidemic monicker but changed their name to Sceptical Schizo later the same year. They operated under the Sceptical Schizo band name until 1993 when they changed their name to Lavra. They didn´t manage to release a full-length studio album during the 1988-1993 period, but they were still relatively active releasing no less than four demos and two EPs during their original run.

Stylistically the first four demo releases were in a brutal thrash metal style although the band began to experiment with their sound on the last two demos. Sepultura and Possessed were the most valid references when listening to the demo material from Sceptical Schizo. When they released the June 1992 "Into the Suction of Blue / Withdrawn" EP things had however changed drastically, as Sceptical Schizo now played an experimental/avant-garde death-doom metal style and that tendencey continued on "The Plight" EP. On "Aggressions", Sceptical Schizo have opted to return to the raw thrash metal style of their demos, but they don´t really hit the mark.

The murky darkness and aggression of the early demo recordings aren´t really present on this dry and digital recorded EP and lead vocalist/guitarist Joonas Sukanen now has a shouting and rather powerless delivery. The distorted and brutal death/thrash metal vocals of the early releases are gone, and as the music is also pretty standard fare thrash metal (Slayer is an obvious influence but Sceptical Schizo aren´t nearly as intense or effective in their delivery), there´s just little here to make "Aggressions" stand out among the vast number of thrash metal releases coming out every year. A 2.5 star (50%) rating is warranted.

"The Plight" is an EP release by Finnish death-doom metal (previously thrash metal) act Sceptical Schizo. The EP was released through Wounded Love Records in January 1993. It´s the successor to the June 1992 "Into the Suction of Blue / Withdrawn" EP. Sceptical Schizo formed in 1988 under the Epidemic monicker but changed their name to Sceptical Schizo later the same year. They operated under the Sceptical Schizo band name until 1993 when they changed their name to Lavra. They didn´t manage to release a full-length studio album during the 1988-1993 period, but they were still relatively active releasing no less than four demos and two EPs. "The Plight" was their last release prior to changing their name to Lavra and it´s the only Sceptical Schizo release which was put out through a label during their original run.

"The Plight" features 2 tracks and a total playing time of 15:10 minutes. The music is slow, heavy, and melancholic death-doom metal but with the occassional slow death-n´roll touch (and even a nod or two towards funeral doom metal). Sceptical Schizo occasionally show a slightly more experimental/avant-garde edge, but "The Plight" is generally a more "normal" death-doom metal release compared to the highly experimental "Into the Suction of Blue / Withdrawn" EP. The sound production is raw and unpolished but it´s still the best quality sound production on any of the Sceptical Schizo releases from the 1988-1993 period.

How a relatively mediocre brutal thrash metal act turned into a creative and intriguing experimental death-doom metal act over the course of a few years is beyond me, but Sceptical Schizo must have taken a conscious choice during the early 90s death metal explosion and decided to jump the thrash metal ship and play a completely different music style. There´s nothing connecting the four demos with the two EPs Sceptical Schizo released after them, and it could well have been two completely different bands playing. "The Plight" is a good quality death-doom metal release and with the unusual songwriting ideas which Sceptical Schizo incorporate I´d even say that it´s a relatively unique release. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.

"Into the Suction of Blue / Withdrawn" is an EP release by Finnish thrash/death metal act Sceptical Schizo. The EP was independently released in June 1992 and follows the release of no less than four demo recordings which were released in the years 1989-1991. Sceptical Schizo formed in 1988 under the Epidemic monicker but changed their name to Sceptical Schizo later the same year. They operated under the Sceptical Schizo band name until 1993 when they changed their name to Lavra.

The four demos preceding this 2 tracks, 11:50 minutes long EP were all in a brutal thrash metal style, but the last two demos "Danse Macabre" (August 1990) and especially "The Four Seasons" (February 1991) saw Sceptical Schizo experiment with their sound and it was audible that the band were on a musical journey which was far from over. Listening to "Into the Suction of Blue / Withdrawn" that becomes even more clear, because Sceptical Schizo are now no longer playing thrash metal but instead perform a weird and experimental/avant-garde death-doom metal style (some sections of "Withdrawn" can even be labelled funeral doom metal and there´s a slow and heavy death´n´roll touch here and there too) with both growling vocals and some murky gothic type male clean vocals. I´m honestly not sure how to describe this correctly, but it´s certainly both odd and unconventional (the use of clarinet and keyboards are quite unusual in the way they are used here). Maybe a band like the French in Supuration/SUP is a valid reference, but this is actually pretty unique for the time.

The sound production is decent but also unpolished and a bit murky. It´s suits the aestethics of the music pretty well though. "Into the Suction of Blue / Withdrawn" has come as a complete surprise to me after listening to Sceptical Schizo´s demos. Nothing on those demos (even though the last two did feature a more experimnetal edge) could have prepared me for what "Into the Suction of Blue / Withdrawn" contains. I´m confused but in a good way and the odd avant-garde death-doom metal style of "Into the Suction of Blue / Withdrawn" is certainly more interesting and accomplished than anything Sceptical Schizo had put out before. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.

SCEPTICAL SCHIZO The Four Seasons

"The Four Seasons" is the fourth demo recording by Finnish thrash metal act Sceptical Schizo. The demo was independently released in February 1991. It´s the successor to the August 1990 "Danse Macabre" demo.

"The Four Seasons" is a pun on Antonio Lucio Vivaldi´s four violin concertos known as "The Four Seasons". The four tracks (partially titled "Spring", "Summer", "Autumn", and "Winter") on this demo have however absolutely nothing to do with Vivaldi´s famous works. This is brutal thrash metal/bordering death metal and in line with the more creative songwriting style on the "Danse Macabre" demo, "The Four Seasons" features an increase in experimental songwriting ideas. So, "The Four Seasons" is not quite as abrasive and primitive as the band´s first two demos, and Sceptical Schizo show a lot of growth in the songwriting department on this demo.

The musicianship is also stronger and the band have obviously honed their playing skills a lot since the first 1989 demo. The vocals are still grunted, raw, and aggressive thrash metal vocals delivered in staccato punchy style. They sometimes border death metal growling, but I´d say it´s more of an influence rather than the vocals being pure death metal growling. The sound production is decent, but not great. Just like the case was on all preceding demo releases "The Four Seasons" doesn´t feature a powerful demo quality production job. It sounds a bit amaturish. A 2.5 star (50%) rating is warranted.

SCEPTICAL SCHIZO Danse Macabre

UMUR
"Danse Macabre" is the third demo recording by Finnish thrash metal act Sceptical Schizo. The demo was independently released in August 1990. It´s the band´s second 1990 demo following the release of the "Dispossessed" demo earlier the same year.

"Danse Macabre" continues the brutal thrash metal sound of the first two demos, but Sceptical Schizo have again honed their skills and they are slightly more technically accomplished on this demo compared to the first two demos. They´ve obviously also toyed with their songwriting and have incorporated new elements to make their songs more varied. Other than the badly produced acoustic/clean guitar sections, this new more diverse songwriting approach makes the material a little more interesting than what Sceptical Schizo have released before. The vocals are still grunted staccato delivered thrash/proto-death metal vocals and although the music is now more varied I´d still say that Sepultura and Possessed are the two more valid reference.

The sound production is relatively lo-fi, but not terrible sounding. It suits the material pretty well although the production values do leave an air of amaturism surrounding the demo. Upon conclusion "Danse Macabre" is a decent quality demo release from Sceptical Schizo and a 2.5 star (50%) rating isn´t all wrong.
