Whiskey In the Jar is a top-class hard rock single with a bit of Celtic folk flavour to it, based as it is on a famed Irish number about the adventures of a highwayman. Combining excellent solos from Eric Bell and an iconic vocal performance from Phil Lynott, it well deserves its classic reputation.

The B-side, Black Boys In the Corner, consists of Phil singing "I'm a little black boy and I don't know my place!", which is as good a motto as any for one of the few black men to work as the frontman of a hard rock outfit in Thin Lizzy's vein at the time. The composition shows a bit of funk influence in the opening beat, and in its later phases takes a left turn into a bit of a Hendrix tribute, an effective riposte to anyone boneheaded enough to make an issue of Phil's racial background.
