HAMMERFALL — Renegade (review)

Warthur
HammerFall have a fairly basic selection of lyrical topics - Templars, Crusaders, knights, warriors, and hammers. Renegade doesn't see them deviate from that very much - see the song titles - but they're consistently competent in their delivery. Renegade does not offer a quantum leap in the standards of their performance or a departure from their tried and tested style, which is its strength and its failing. The major difference between this and the previous albums is that this time around the balance is a bit closer to typical European power metal in the post-Helloween vein and the band draw less on the likes of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest than previously.

If you're in the mood for some power metal, it's great - but just about any other HammerFall album would do just as well. It's good, no question about it, but it's not so good as to be indispensable.
