Amon Amarth's debut album is an entertaining but not brilliant fusion of death metal and Viking metal. Specifically, the performances and compositions are more or less true to the general Swedish death metal style, but somehow the band manage to capture a similar atmosphere to that of the Viking-themed black metal made by Enslaved or Blood Fire Death-era Bathory - despite the fact that there's little to no black metal influence in evidence on the album. It's a decent enough listen, though there aren't any parts which especially stand out as being exceptionally good, so it's more pleasant background music as far as I'm concerned.
