After the excellent For Victory, Bolt Thrower seemed to slow down the pace of their studio album releases, aiming for quality over quantity. (That is, in fact, why they haven't released an album since Those Once Loyal - they don't want to put out material they're not confident is their best yet.)

It's an approach I can respect - provided, of course, the quality is there in the first place, and as always Bolt Thrower can be counted on to deliver. Mercenary is an excellent death metal album in the style Bolt Thrower established on The IVth Crusade and For Victory; here and there the science fiction elements and nods to Warhammer 40,000 which were by and large absent from those two albums begin to creep back in, and indeed on the whole this one has a less sombre and funereal tone than For Victory, suggesting that this time around Bolt Thrower are out to have fun and rock out and sing about war - and few in death metal do it better.
