This debut album from black metal's most dedicated Tolkien fans doesn't quite manage to do anything outrageously special, but it's an entertaining enough first attempt with sufficient folky elements slipped in to hint at the band's future direction. Summoning more than make up for the album's lack of particularly groundbreaking material by playing with an incredible level of enthusiasm and ferocity; in particular, the vocals by Silenius are completely unrestrained, distinguishing his ravings from the standard black metal shrieks.

Summoning would shift to a slower and much more symphonic direction shortly after this one, and to be honest it's that more original sound which makes them a compelling and interesting group, but this debut album is good enough that fans of the band and second wave black metal alike will probably appreciate it.
