MANOWAR — Louder Than Hell (review)

Manowar recover from previous missteps somewhat at the cost of going full self-parody on Louder Than Hell. Returning drummer Scott Columbus sounds like he never left, whilst new guitarist Karl Logan helps the band develop a new, punchy, Judas Priest-influenced power metal sound. But at the same time, they're even more difficult to take seriously than previously, with the lyrical content and Eric Adam's delivery in particular now reminiscent of the first Tenacious D album. Fans of the band's classic first four albums may find the shift in sound to be a bridge too far, but for my part I think it is a profound improvement over the two preceding releases, and it's a lot of fun if you like unintentional comedy metal.
