Though HammerFall's second album doesn't represent any major advances over their debut, it's still a strong example of what they do the best - power metal with a harder edge than usual and which dials back the cheese just a little bit when compared to the rest of the power metal pack. Varying their sound and including a few quieter parts here and there to prevent things getting too monotonous, HammerFall just about manage to avoid actually getting boring, but at the same time to a large extent this is - like many of their subsequent albums - a mild rehash of their debut, with not quite musical growth evident to really make it feel essential.
