Manowar make a welcome return to the fantasy-oriented lyrics of their earlier days - politics really aren't their forte - but unfortunately Gods of War doesn't constitute a return to form. When you go five years between album and you still stuff the album with as much sub-symphonic filler as this bears, that doesn't speak well for your songwriting batteries, and whilst there are some good sections which kind of remind me of a poor man's Judas Priest, whenever the album begins to build some momentum it's immediately brought to a halt by another attempt at synthesised symphonic majesty which just comes across as Manowar trying to kid themselves that they're Rhapsody or something.
