Warthur
Bal-Sagoth's debut album is light on the symphonic aspects which they would master in subsequent releases and instead provides a mingling of black and death metal approaches, a fusion particularly apparent in the way the vocals switch from a death metal grunt to a black metal shriek at the drop of a hat. It's an interesting album, not least for its lyrical focus on sword and sorcery adventures as opposed to the usual black metal themes of Satan, misanthropy, depression and hate, but on the whole it doesn't break that much new ground, and whilst the band are good at what they do here they rarely excel at it.
