Obituary are one of the pioneering bands of the death metal genre. The band came from Tampa, Florida, and was founded as Executioner in 1985 and then changed their name to xecutioner to avoid confusion with the other one. In 1988, shortly before the release of their first album "Slowly We Rot", they changed their name to Obituary. Obituary still remain an influential band in the Florida death metal movement that arose in the late 1980s. The 1990 release "Cause of Death" featured James Murphy on guitar (Cancer and Disincarnate) replacing Allen West for unknown reasons. This release has been described as a seminal album in the Death Metal genre. Vocalist John Tardy is recognized as one of the first vocalists to use an abnormally low growl (compared to the screechy growls used by predecessors Death and Possessed).

Obituary are listed by Nielsen Soundscan as the fifth best-selling

OBITUARY Darkest Day

"Darkest Day" is the 8th full-length studio album by US death metal act Obituary. The album was released through Candlelight Records in June 2009.

The music on the album is in the trademark simple, groove based and brutal death metal style that Obituary have practised since day one. The addition of lead guitarist Ralph Santolla on "Xecutioner's Return (2007)" boosted the band´s sound with his many and varied guitar solos. The same can be said about his contributions to "Darkest Day", which takes a similar approach, with loads of solos from Santolla. As always the impressive growls by John Tardy and the downtuned and brutal yet groove based riffing is the basis in the music though. Fans of the band will probably love this album, while those who never enjoyed Obituary won´t have a reason to check them out now. They basically sound the same as they have done since "Slowly We Rot (1989)" with only moderate tweaks to their songwriting and overall sound. Obituary are one of the few death metal acts out there with a completely distinct sound though and they always deliver their music with great conviction and fierce energy. That also counts for "Darkest Day", which is another lesson in why the band are counted among the elite death metal acts on the scene. The album kicks in gear with the fast paced (there are no blast beating on the album, which has never been a part of the band´s sound) "List of Dead" and just never lets go of your throat while it´s spinning. Aggressive, sneering, heavy and brutal as few, Obituary are not even close to sounding tired. It´s obvious they still have an unstoppable appetite for playing their music.

Like it´s predecessor "Darkest Day" feature a very bass heavy sound production, that suits the music well.

While "Darkest Day" is hardly a revelation when it comes to the evolution of the death metal genre, it´s another high quality release by Obituary fully deserving a 4 star (80%) rating. Even after 20 years they are still on top of their game.

Deadly intentions...

Genre: death metal

In the year of 1989, Obituary introduced the world to their heavy, dirty and brutal Hellhammer/Frost-inspired brand of death metal, a style that they still stick to. Most of the riffage is quite simple, and regardless whether the song in question is slow, midtempo, or uptempo, it is brutal as hell.

I really like the no-nonsense full on style of this album, which was really unheard of at the time. Modern listeners will find that the album lacks many elements that characterize modern death metal, such as blastbeats and a million riffs stuffed into one song. "Slowly We Rot" is a lesson in less is more, and carry on the Hellhammer/Celtic Frost ethic of sticking to a few simple, but crushing, riffs per song and then just letting it rip. John Tardy's sewer-like oozing growled vocals are totally awesome on this album and suit the heavy, dirty sound like a glove.

This is a strong and genre-defining debut release. It may not be as good as subsequent albums, like "The End Complete" or "Cause of Death" - and the songs may be a bit samey - but it is still one hell of a death metal release.

Dethroned emperor...

Genre: death metal

Some EPs truly serve the function of enabling the artist to have creative output and release new tracks, while others seem to be made more for the sake of fans and collectors.

This one falls into the second category, as its content seems to be of interest primarily to fans of the band, as all its contents have been released elsewhere.

"Left to Die" and "Forces Realign" were previously unreleased, when the EP came out, but were later featured on "Darkest Day". These two tracks are in the classic heavy and primitive Obituary-style, and they're pretty good.

Then there's a rerecording of "Slowly We Rot" which should be of interest to long time Obituary fans.

My primary interest in this release is Obituary's cover version of Celtic Frost's classic "Dethroned Emperor". Given that Obituary already sound a lot like Hellhammer/Celtic Frost, it is not surprising that Obituary's version is pretty close to the original. Still, I think it's a good cover version and Tardy's spewing growls fit the song quite well.

Recommended to fans of the band, but essentially, there is no reason to buy this EP if you already have "Darkest Day" - then it would be better to just purchase the two remaining songs digitally.

OBITUARY The End Complete

Mjöllnir
By this third album, I've slowly come to admit they were running low on ideas. I tried very hard to like it but I don't get anywhere near as excited as I did with the classic debut and sophomore albums. It's a shame that for many of the Florida bands it was a similar story. This time around it feels a little less intense overall despite having the usual Obituary elements all seemingly present and correct (those vomiting vocals as rough and hideous as they ever were). In fact, despite not having listened to this for a long while, I still recall several songs without having to think "how did that sound again?" which is a good sign.

But I have to admit the churning, Celtic Frost inspired riffs were just not hitting home like they did on Cause of Death. The tracks run into each other in a way the band had managed to avoid admirably earlier, and their sound effects parts between songs gimmick was largely done away with. Allen West is back on lead guitar which gives us a flavour of Slowly We Rot mixed in with the slower demonic heaviness of Cause of Death, but it still doesn't seem to be quite enough.

There's good moments here for sure but it seems less inspired, and ultimately would give way to two sub-par releases before they initially called it quits. The gold disc reissue includes two live cuts, which are just there really. The Andreas Marschall artwork is captivating though, so it looks nice on the shelf at least!

OBITUARY Xecutioner's Return

UMUR
Xecutioner's Return is the 7th full-length studio album by US, Florida based death metal act Obituary. The band switched to Candlelight Records which marks the first album release on another label than Roadrunner Records. Another big change is the departure of lead guitarist Allan West who was serving time after repeatedly being arrested for drinking and driving. His replacement Ralph Santolla came fresh out of a stint with Deicide, with whom he recorded The Stench of Redemption (2006) album with. Ralph Santolla has also played with acts such as Iced Earth, Death and Sebastian Bach & Friends among others.

The music on Xecutioner's Return is in typical Obituary style. Crushingly heavy yet groovy riffing and occasionally faster paced parts ( there are actually more faster paced songs on this album than usual). John Tardy sounds even meaner than he did on the last album. One of his best performances IMO. The production is dark and bass heavy. When I put Xecutioner's Return on in my car, my car speakers were almost destroyed. That´s how much bottom end there is on this album. The biggest change compared to the last couple of albums by Obituary is the addition of Ralph Santolla though. He boosts Obituary´s sound with his many excellent and varied guitar solos, just as he boosted Deicide´s sound on The Stench of Redemption. The man is very accomplished and his playing suits the music well. A brilliant decision to include him in the band. All songs are of high quality and it´s hard not to be very excited about this album.

I really enjoyed Frozen in Time (2005) but Xecutioner's Return is just a notch better and ranks among the best albums released by Obituary if you ask me. Xecutioner's Return is a great example of how vital and full of fierce energy Obituary are when they are at their best. A deserved 4 star rating. Close to a 4.5 star rating.
