THROWDOWN picture
Throwdown is a straight edge metalcore / hardcore / groove metal band from Orange County in California, formed in 1997.

Throwdown's style has changed over the years. While metalcore is a constant component in the band's music, the band has also drawn on metallic hardcore, beatdown hardcore and groove metal. The Venom & Tears and Deathless albums used groove metal as primary influences.

...And they do exactly that

This record, from one of the few California hardcore bands to gain national attention, can be summed up in one descriptive word: MOSH. That's exactly what this band wants you to do, and they help you through it with easy-to-shout-along words and plenty of tough-as-nails breakdowns. All you tough guys, limber up and get ready to bust out with the windmills and floorpunches; Beyond Repair is one of those records that you just cannot sit still while listening. Meant to be played at high levels, Throwdown delivers a devastating sonic assault from start to finish. Many consider this to be the best Throwdown release, and it definitely accomplishes what it sets out to do. So why only 4 stars? Well, there is not a lot of variety on this album. Not all albums NEED variety, but in this case, it is difficult to listen to this from start to finish without getting a little bored in the middle. However, the standout tunes (No One, Don't Lose Sight, Power Figure, and Get Sick) are enough to make this a worthy investment.

Above average quality, but average originality

Throwdown's musical effectiveness strikes me as a bit odd. They sounded original back in 1997, and have since become a face in a crowd with the rise of so-called "mosh metal" with its E-chug focus. Yet all three of their full-lengths have held on, for me, far longer than any of the newer bands' releases. This one has proved no exception. I consider it to be their current best after having several months to digest it and compare it to their previous two full-lengths. I like the newer, tougher attitude. I like the new vocalist's voice better - even if he does sound more generic than Keith's more distinctive scream. The grooviness that showed itself on their previous disc has increased here.

Following Hatebreed, Throwdown are making a grab for mainstream recognition, and this is a good record to do it with. Just don't take it too seriously; this band started out as a tongue-in-cheek group with the single goal of having as much ridiculous fun as possible at every show, and have taken it further than anyone really expected. They seem to be getting more serious now. A good record to get pumped up to or work out to. It's not the greatest thing ever, but it is a kickboxing, finger-pointing good time.
