Type O Negative's debut album is this weird hybrid thing; the slow riffs are straight out of doom metal, the fast ones plus the vocals during the fast sections are direct from the hardcore punk playbook, and the keyboard textures are goth rock through and through. The mashup of doom and hardcore had been attempted before, of course, by Black Flag; Type O's main innovations here seem to be to add goth to the mix, and to let Peter Steele just rant angrily about his ex-girlfriend (with the occasional veering into spiteful, mean-spirited takes on various political subjects).

In truth, at points the album gets disturbingly misogynistic in its spewing of hatred and it kind of makes Steele sound like a wife-beating brute anyone would be sensible to leave, and it's just a little bit disjointed structurally. (In particular, two of the last three tracks seem to be jokes pure and simple, and after the first two tracks the album's schtick gets kind of old.)

Infamously, they pretty much recorded this debut album twice, once in this form and one with a slightly different selection of compositions and a fake "live" production as The Origin of the Feces, with the track names of the Slow, Deep and Hard tracks appearing on there changed to obscure the fact that the latter album was essentially a rehash of this one. Calling a do-over for your second album doesn't exactly suggest great satisfaction with how this first go-around turned out, though to be honest of the two versions, I mildly prefer this to the rehash.

I can kind of do without either, mind, because there's better gothic metal, doom metal, hardcore, and doom-hardcore/goth-doom mashups out there.
