Compared to Drudkh’s previous efforts, Microcosmos is perhaps a slight disappointment, but just in Drudkh’s standards. Which basically means that Microcosmos, the band’s seventh full-length, is still a great release, but doesn’t offer anything ground-breaking.

In addition to overall saddened and melancholic mood of which Drudkh is known for, certain elements of anger are present, a good example being the power chord riffs in ”Everything Unsaid Before”. Like Blood in Our Wells, Microcosmos has also hints of progressive song structures, as witnessed in ”Distant Cries of Cranes” with its sudden sections where the bass guitar leads the music. Also guitar solos are very present on the album.

”Decadence” starts subtly and builds up nicely with sweet guitar solos, but this is also one of the first times when I feel that Drudkh perhaps drags on a bit too long. It is, however, compensated with the beautiful melodies in the latter half of the song. Drudkh manages to come up with totally unique melodies which is one of the best features of Microcosmos. It’s always a pleasure to hear something totally refreshing, because otherwise Drudkh plays maybe a bit too safe melodies on Microcosmos - with the exception of this particular song ending and the next song ”Ars Poetica” of which happy sounding riffs are reminiscent of Autumn Aurora’s ”Sunwheel” but still being something unique.

Microcosmos is a great album that maybe suffers a bit from short running-time (6 songs of which 2 are intro and outro) and the fact that it doesn’t show much new ideas. Production-wise, Microcosmos sounds full and all the instruments are easily audible. Even if this album wasn’t as good as I expected - remembering that it’s still a great album - I still have high hopes for the next Drudkh output that hopefully comes out soon. I don't believe this band has run out of ideas yet.
