After a well received and unpronounceable demo back in 2012 Chthe’ilist (can’t pronounce their name either by the way) have released their astonishing debut some 4 years later in 2016. These Canadian’s aren’t lacking previous experience though with drummer Philippe Boucher having played with Beyond Creation (reminding me that Earthborn Evolution has been sitting on my wants list for some time now) and vocalist, guitars and bass player Pat Tougas coming from Serocs.

Le Dernier Crepuscule (The Last Twilight) is one of the most brooding and dark death metal albums I’ve heard since Sulphur Aeon’s Gateway To The Antisphere and shares their dense sound. The vocals are largely of the very low guttural growl variety and musically the band throw in enough technicality to keep tech death fans happy though sometimes it can be hidden in the dense production which works well for the apocalyptic feel of the album. Surprisingly it’s some Meshuggah style slappy bass work that stands out. The seven compositions, all pretty long baring the atmospheric mood setting opening title track work better taking the album as a whole including the thirteen minute plus Tales Of The Majora Mythos Part 1 with suitably climatic end of the world feel echoed in the dark cover art. Some suitably atmospheric keyboard orchestrations from Claude Leduc add some hauntingly melancholic touches too who also plays occasional guitar and bass.

Le Dernier Crepuscule is not an immediate record by any means taking a few plays to get under the skin but then don’t all the best albums? Those who enjoy this kind of extreme metal are well advised to check these guys out and half way through the year this might just be my favourite death album of 2016 so far.

I've only listened to this one so far but it set a great first impression for me. I need to listen to it again sometime.
