In search of a replacement for Charlie Dominici, Dream Theater held an audition and screened over 200 participants while among them is the Canadian singer, James LaBrie, who's still with Winter Rose, a glam band also from his hometown. Finally, LaBrie got his position and had been their lead singer ever since, and this is their most commercially succesful album that featured LaBrie for the very first time.

"Pull Me Under", one of the heavy tracks of the album received a decent rotation on MTV and successfully pulled up their name from the underground. "Another Day", a classy beautiful radio ballad with the gorgeous soprano saxophone is an astonishing hit and introduced their name to an even larger audiences but the masterpiece and my favourite of all time is the colossal piece of "Metropolis Part I" epic, from the mysterious start, to LaBrie's hypnotizing high-pitch screamer, and to the final passage of extra-ordinary instrumental jam. "Surrounded" and "Wait For Sleep" are enchantingly good keyboard-driven tracks, and "Learning To Live" could be a painful too-long track for some but it's still accessible and a cleverly-made for casual fans.

To sum up, "Images And Words" is like a grand entrance for metal-fans into prog and vice versa. If you even don't like those two genres at all, they still had a lot of ear-friendly tracks to listen. To me, this is their second best release after "Scenes From A Memory" and a must-buy for the "Metropolis" track itself.
