The truth of Cain...

Genre: black metal

Possession may have been formed in 2012, but they look and sound like they're a late 1980s black metal band. "His Best Deceit" is their debut EP and is available on CD and tape, and takes you back to when black metal was black metal.

The EP features four original tracks and a cover version of Seputuras 'Necromancer'. While there are elements from modern black metal to be heard on the album, such as a couple of blastbeats and reverb heavy vocals, Possession look back to the thrashy roots of the genre. Thus, after a super creepy intro, 'Possession' kicks into a flurry of simple, but efficient, raw thrash attack. 'The Truth of Cain' is an ultra-fast thrasher, but changes into a heavy marching affair, which works very well. 'His Best Deceit' is another onslaught of simple riffs accompanied by various blastbeats, oozing with evil. 'Necromancer' has been given a blackened overhaul, and this enhancement makes it fit very well into the overall sound of the EP.

Dirty and old school, this EP should appeal to most fans of black metal. I also think that it will sit well with thrash metal fans who want to explore the rawer end of that genre.
