Pet Slimmers of the Year are a British experimental who operate within the vast universe of post-rock and post-metal. They are known for focusing on being primarily instrumental, only sparsely making use of vocals. With two EPs under their belt, it is now time for a full-length in the form of Fragments of Uniform.
The music offered in the album is dark and introspective, and, as expected, there is not a lot of singing to be heard on this album. When they do sing, as in the case of 'Churning of the Sea of Milk', it is inward looking and brooding. Slow in pace and dark in atmosphere, the tunes on the album build on soft, but melancholic, clean-guitarred passages which are intertwined with crushingly heavy and doom-laden sludgy sections. Multi-layered and multi-facetted, yet single-minded, this album takes the listener through vistas of darkness and is best enjoyed in quiet surroundings where the listener can concentrate fully on the music.
This is not music for everyone, but fans of post-rock and post-metal should definitely check it out. Those who are into sludge and doom metal might also like it due to its heavier passages.
