Genre: progressive metal

After too long a hiatus, the Mexican-American progressive metal outfit Dimension released their third full-length album in November this year (the previous album "Ego" was released in 2007).

A 2-disc affair, we are dealing with an epic slab of progressive metal here, which combines crushingly heavy guitars and staccato grooves with epic melodies and spacey keyboard effects. There is a certain darkness to the album, caused primarily by the heavy guitars, but also by the strangely crooning voice of David Quicho. There are plenty of quicks and technically impressive progressive elements throughout the album to satisfy the eardrums of any proghead.

It is not a flawless album though. There is a cover version of The Beatles' 'Eleanor Rigby' and one of Led Zeppelin's 'Immigrant Song', and I must admit that I think that both cover versions are pretty weak. Apart from that, however, "Revlution" is a pretty good album. It is perhaps a bit too long, and disc 2 strikes me as being a bit tame compared to disc 1. There's still some good stuff on it though.

The production comes across a bit thin at first, but after a couple of songs, you should get used to it. There's nothing wrong with the songwriting and the musicianship although Quicho's crooning may not appeal to everyone.

Overall, this is a quite successful and enjoyable progressive metal listen. It's epic, dark, and impressive.
