CARCASS picture
Carcass is a goregrind/death metal band formed by Napalm Death guitarist Bill Steer together with drummer Ken Owen in 1985 and is considered by many to have been one of the most influential and talented bands within the extreme metal scene.

Carcass was originally based in Liverpool. On their first demo, Sanjiv contributed vocals. In 1987, bassist and vocalist Jeffrey Walker, formerly of the Electro Hippies, joined them.

The band focused on topics mostly relating to the medical field and bizarre combinations of medical equipment and chemicals with human anatomy, such as "Intenacious, intersecting / Reaving fats from corporal griskin [...] Skeletal groats triturated, desinently exsiccated". This lyrical focus led many in the music press to falsely believe that one or more members of the band had studied medicine. There is more evidence to show that this lyrical focus was a method of pushing vegetarianism (For example, "Exhume To Consume").

Here there's little to no sign of the grindcore sound that Carcass made their name with on their previous albums; instead, this journey through a mortician's thesaurus is in a solid death metal style with the occasional more traditional metal-sounding guitar solo. The band regard this as a "progressive" album, but whilst the lyrics are certainly verbose in a Tales From Topographic Oceans sort of way musically speaking the technicality on display here is pretty simple compared to the sort of material Death or Atheist or Cynic would be cranking out at around the same time. Still, this is a nice early 90s death metal album which doesn't embarrass itself when set next to contemporary releases from Deicide or Morbid Angel.

Pop death metal!

Yes, this is the only way I can put this album. Is their even any death metal elements in this album? And if their isnt...who cares...

After the whole melodic thing made Carcass metal superstars...they decided to take that whole melodic thing, and become even more contemporary...thatr right CONTEMPORARY DEATH METAL!!! it exists, and this album prooves it.

Now Carcass fans and the metal community have divided opinions on this album...some suprisingly love it, some like it, and some really hate it.

To be honest, this is the thrid time I've heard this album and I'm only really starting to like it now. First few listens...it doesnt really stick out...but after the first few your like...Ok i get it now.

All gore is gone from the lyrics and the topics are more social and pardoyesque...maybe considreded satire at times...but sometimes the lyrics can be a bit of a joke. It is slightly watered from what you'd expect from Carcass...but it is easier to listen to.

1. Keep On Rotting In The Free World - One of their best songs in my album. Classic riff thats a right belter. 10/10

2. Tomorrow Belongs To Nobody - Kick ass ridd. Great chorus. 10/10

3. Black Star - I really dont like this song too much. It's just a bit stupid to be honest. Although it's not that bad. 7/10

4. Cross My Heart - Basically the same as what I think about Black Star, although this song is worse. 6/10

5. Child's Play - Very interesting arrangement. Great riffs and lyrics. I love how groovy and slow it is. 10/10

6. Room 101 - Great main riff. Not a big fan of the chorus though. 8/10

7. Polarized - Great chorus. Just a kick ass song. Great twists and turns. A bit like a little rollercoaster 10/10

8. Generation Hexed - I believe their is an Entombed influence...from the death and roll style. Just a kick ass song. 10/10

9. Firm Hand - One of their most diverse songs. Great lyrics and arrangement. This song also has acoustic guitars in it...now its not every day you hear that in death metal. 10/10

10. R**k The Vote - One of their best riffs. Great chorus. Amazing guitar work. Just kick ass, plain and simple. 10/10

11. Don't Believe A Word - Amazing intro. Very different. Not a big fan of the chorus. 9/10

12. Go To Hell - It's pure cheese...but its not so bad. 8/10

CONCLUSION: By far their best and by far their worst. This is the marmite of metal...dare to try :D

As a first demo...this isn't tooooooooooo bad...but to be honest, its still not the best.

This demo is included with the Reek Of Putrefaction dual disc reissue...and its worth getting for the actual album, but you can easily skip this...in fact...I'd reccomend it.

It's just not that nice to listen to, mainly for one thing...THE VOCALS!!! I mean it, they're just terrible, they just sound like burps. I can see why they needed a vocalsit, recording it one take and all...but to be honest, all of the are great death metal/grindocre vocalists...but they had to get someone called Sanjev or whatever is name is to do the vocals.

The songs are still their, but they really are nothing compared to the album versions.

1. Genital Grinder - To be honest...I prefer this to the album version.10/10

2. Regurgitation Of Giblets - Vocals can be muddy at times and the guitar sound is very static like. 7/10

3. Festerday - Quick and fast...just how I like my women ;) 10/10

4. Limb From Limb - Meh...too generic and it just sounds terrible 5/10

5. Rotten To The Gore - At times the song is just all over the place. The vocals are just terrible. 5/10

6. Excreted Alive - Nice and quick...and not too annoying. 8/10

7. Malignant Defecation - Nothing compared to the album version. Very poor. 4/10

8. Fermetning Innards - Just sounds like burping. Although I have to give credit to the instrumentalists. 6/10

9. Necro-Cannibal Bloodfeast - The vocals aren't too bad in this one, and I have to admit, their is some great riffs. 7/10

10. Psychopathologist - I like the guitar feedback, but the vocals are just terrible. 5/10

11. Die In Pain - This isn't even funny...its justs stupid...You Suffer is a billion times better and is the true revolutionary mark...this is just a dumb pardoy. 1/10

12. Pungent Excruciation - Really bad...it just sounds like something mentally ill. 4/10

13. Face Meltaargh - It's just terrible. 3/10

CONCLUSION: As a demo...meh...but its just not that good...some ok moments I agree, but the rest is just anal vomit really.

Alot of people complain about the production work of this album...but compared to their demo...this is sound qulaity at its best.

Now grindcore usually is supposed to have bad production quality...its just the way it is...its to keep the punk element quality alive, which is the interpretation through the art...although some people leave their hats at the door when art and music are combined.

This is a strong grindcore album...comparing it to Scum by Napalm Death, Scum is favoured alot...but Carcass did add their own flair to the grindcore seen...with some stoner, death metal and less punk to their music.

In the 80's when everything was incredibly overdone...the grindcore scene really was a push foward...and thanks to John Peel and other followers, it really blossomed into something interesting.

As grindcore goes this isn't too bad...the prouduction is pretty good for a grind album and as a debut, its pretty impressive.

Ohh and the artwork is cool...and the lyrics are also very interested (if you're into gore and all haha)

1. Genital Grinder - Good intro. Production is a bit muddy. 8/10

2. Regurgitation Of Giblets - Great riffs and some cool vocals. Classic example of grind. 10/10

3. Maggot Colony - Some interesting riffs and sections. Killer vocals. 9/10

4. Pyosisfied (Rotten To The Gore) - Killer main riff. Very interesting arrangement with some punky and stoner moments. 9/10

5. Carbonized Eyesockets - Killer vocals. Just crazy as hell. 10/10

6. Frenzied Detruncation - Very mind melting. 8/10

7. Vomited Anal Tract - It does sound like vomit haha. 10/10

8. Festerday - Killer blast beats. I love how short and quick the song is. 10/10

9. Fermenting Innards - Quite punky. Sometimes the guitar is too muddy in the mix. 8/10

10. Excreted Alive - Nice riffs and a cool guitar solo. 8/10

11. Suppuration - Love the chorus. A very frantic song. I love how raw the guitar sounds and how it at times goes offbeat with the drums. 10/10

12. Foeticide - Great arrangment. Jeff's vocals are amazing. 10/10

13. Microwaved Uterogestation - Love the chorus. The time changes are pretty cool too. 10/10

14. Feast On Dismembered Carnage - I love how the vocals are manipualted in the song. 10/10

15. Splattered Cavities - A very frantic & head crushing song. A bit scary at times. 10/10

16. Psychopatholigist - Great lyrics. Some cool riffs and crazy tempos. Cool evil vocals at times. 10/10

17. Burnt To A Crisp - Pretty cool vocals and arrangement. I love Jeff's wee scream at the start. 9/10

18. Pungent Excruciation - Interesting guitar solos. I love that heavy bass sound. 8/10

19. Manifestation Of Verrucose Urethra - Some cool moments with some nice guitar work. 8/10

20. Oxidised Razor Masticator - Cool arrangement, but pretty generic. 8/10

21. Mucopurelence Excretor - Nice and quick :D 9/10

22. Malignant Defecation - Great intro. Odd arrangment throughout. 9/10

CONCLUSION: This album isn't their best and its not the best grindcore album I've heard

This is the album that really put Carcass into the metal world as legends and icons.

Before then...Carcass where a pinoeering band in the grindcore scene, and I have to admit, they really puhsed boundaries in that genre and also made England a more preductive place for metal.

But they soon adopted a new and more smarter style of songwriting. Now the songs on this album are quite lengthy, with some even going past the 6 minute mark into a 7 minute head melter. And whilst listening to this album, one thing was churning through my head...this is quite proggy in a weird way.

Now progressive death metal...a new genre of its own which turns up now and then, when listening to it, you can make many comparisons to Carcass during this period. Yes Carcass where experementing alot, and it can be heard in their songwriting, and to be honest...this style is one of my favourites ouf of Carcass experiments.

I prefer Heartwork to this album, mainly cause Heartwork is perfect and flawless...but this is album is a close contender. This album isn't flawless, cause not much is, but to be honest, this album is incredibly enjoyable and its a very interesting experience.

1. Inpropogation - Very dark, eerie and atmospheric intro. Full of exciting twists and turns. Almost progressive in an odd way. 10/10

2. Corporal Jigsore Quandary - This is the famous intro...that Trivium stole (to be honest, if you are gonna "steal" something, you might as well steal from Carcass). It's just a death metal classic really. 10/10

3. Symposium Of Sickness - Has quite a blackened death metal feel to it. Amazing blastbeats and riffs. 9/10

4. Pedigree Butchery - Great odd twists and turns. Proves that death metalcan be very dynamic and interesting. 9/10

5. Incarnated Solvent Abuse - One of their greatest riffs. Very diverse and exciting. Great images condured. 10/10

6. Carneous Cacoffiny - One of their best lyrical moments. Very diverse with some kick ass riffs. 10/10

7. Lavaging Expectorare Of Lysergide Composition - A mainly instrumental based song. Very diverse and interesting. 9/10

8. Forensic Clinicism / The Sanguine Article - Great lyrics. A completel step forward from their first 2 albums. Great arrangement. 10/10

CONCLUSION: This is the seeds of pure melodic death metal. And these seeds kick ass :D
