Cage are a power metal band from San Diego, California USA, formed in 1992 out of the ashes of the metal bands Nomad and Crusher.

Cage recorded a full-length CD as early as 1995, however this album was never made available until 2007 when it was released as The Lost CD as an iTunes exclusive. Instead their first official release was the 1999 album, Unveiled. The line-up on this album consisted of Sean Peck (vocals), Dave Garcia (guitar), Eric Horton (guitar), Mike Giordano (bass), Damien Arletto (drums).

In 2001 Cage released their second album, Astrology. As of this album, Arletto had been replaced by drummer Mikey Niel.

In 2003 Cage released Darker than Black. Anthony Wayne McGinnis had replaced Eric Horton as one of the band's guitarist by this point. Also with this line-up Cage released the album Hell Destroyer in 2007.

In 2009 Cage released their fifth album, Science of Annihilation. Norm Leggio

Cage may pack in a few pledges of allegiance to the cause of TRUE METAL!!! in the lyrics of Supremacy of Steel, but they're no Manowar - instead, their sound represents an exciting mashup of influences including Judas Priest and Mercyful Fate. When the band show such excellent taste in their influences, as well as great skill in blending two very distinct and different sounds to create a third one unique to Cage but still retaining echoes of the band's inspirations, the end result is a power metal presentation which is almost entirely absent of cheesiness. Fans of the more traditional heavy metal end of power metal will be well-served here.

Doctor doom....

Genre: speed metal / power thrash

The band is called Cage. The album is called "Supremacy of Steel". There are songs with titles like "Bloodsteel", "Metal Empire", "War of the Undead", "Flying Fortress", "Doctor Doom", and "Hell Destroyer vs. Metal Devil". The cover artwork displays the band playing on a skull-ornamented stage with three giant monsters (a viking, the Devil and the Grim Reaper) in the background.

Now, the message that all of this conveys to me is: "Metal as fuck".

But what about the music? Well, if there are three words that describe the tunes on the release then it is "metal as fuck"!

Cage deliver the goods on the album in the form of aggressive speed metal tracks with elements from US power metal (such as big choruses and the whole larger-than-life feel) and traditional metal (such as certain passages with lower tempos and more focus on melody). Apart from a couple of heavier songs, the tempo is generally fast and ferocious, ranging from midtempo to uptempo, and there are even a couple of blastbeats every now and then, and the Ripper Owen-esque screaming vocals by Sean Peck (aka. "The Hell Destroyer") suit the aggressive speed metal perfectly. Although Cage consistently stick to the aesthetics of speed metal and power-thrash, there is actually a lot of variation on the album, both in terms of riffage and vocal melodies.

The musicianship is top notch, as is the production, and guitar fans can look forward to a lot of tasty, shreddy, and classic guitar solos of all types, while the drums, while kept in the confinements of the speed and power metal styles, is dynamic and full of nice wee details.

Fans of old school speed metal and power-thrash are going to love this album, while fans of more modern types of metal can also look forward to a couple of more modern elements. In conclusion, Cage's awesome "Supremacy of Steel" is, in every possible way...

Metal.

As.

Fuck.

American stalwarts Cage return in 2009 with yet another lesson in aggressive, rip-it-to-shreds, speedy Heavy Metal. Now, a lot of people file Cage under the Power Metal tag but, while not entirely untrue, it doesn’t quite cover it. Don’t come here looking for the epic grandeur of a Rhapsody (Of Fire) or Fairyland. This stuff is pissed off and intense…think “Painkiller” in a screaming road-rage fit.

This is the kind of Metal that leaves audiences sweaty and nursing sore necks. Science Of Annihilation is double-kick madness, razor-sharp riffs and soaring, intense melody. Taking cues from the likes of Judas Priest, Agent Steel, Helstar and even some of Vicious Rumors’ more intense moments, Cage absolutely brings the Metal. Both “Planet Crusher” and “Scarlet Witch” will have hair flying, horns in the air and steam rising from the audience. The guitar leads all throughout this album are outstanding…intricate and precise to the max. “Spirit Of Vengeance” gives us a short break from the metallic tornado with a strong, mid-tempo rocker. Don’t despair, however, the intensity doesn’t let up and the vocals are in your face. Just when you were catching your breath, here comes “Black River Falls” to spear-tackle you and throw you back on Cage’s speeding train. “Stranger In Black” has a beastly headbanging groove on the intro before jumping head first into another mid-tempo ‘banger. The only even remotely subdued song on the album would be also be the shortest and it’s called “Spectre Of War”, but make no mistake, this is no “power ballad”…this is dark, haunting and brooding. The twin guitar theme in the chorus is amazingly sinister sounding. But just two short minutes after it begins, the album’s title track, a 3-part epic, literally comes in breaking necks with furious speed.

Man, this album is a wild ride. Cage is nothing if not, I’ll say it yet again, intense. I’m a fan of the heavier, darker side of melodic Heavy Metal and this stuff is top notch. Get on the interstate, roll down all the windows, blast this album and I guarantee you a speeding ticket. Go. Buy it. Now.
