I remember Black ‘N Blue as one of the better bands of the eighties glam metal scene, their albums Nasty Nasty and In Heat being my two favourites. Unfortunately they never really had the success achieved by many of their peers ultimately leading to their split in the late eighties.
While better was to come this 1984 debut was a promising start for the band. Despite their glam rock leanings Black ‘N Blue had a harder edge than the lightweight fluff pedalled by the likes of many glam rockers such as Poison for example. The songs range from the anthemic The Strong Will Rock to the driving up tempo metal of Autoblast and I’m The King. There’s a decent cover of Action, a song originally a hit for UK seventies glam rockers The Sweet. Best of all though is the catchy and memorable Hold On To 18. The band are all good players and in vocalist Jaime St James they have a charismatic frontman.
The band has reformed a number of times over the years and are a going concern at the moment, but without guitarist Tommy Thayer who’s now a member of Kiss. Overall a promising start then but if you’re new to the band go and check out Nasty Nasty first.
