OBSCURA A Sonication

Album · 2025 · Technical Death Metal

"A Sonication" is the seventh full-length studio album by German death metal act Obscura. The album was released through Nuclear Blast in February 2025. It´s the successor to "A Valediction" from 2021. Only lead vocalist/guitarist (and band founder) Steffen Kummerer remains from the lineup who recorded the predecessor. "A Sonication" was released in the midst of a storm of controversy regarding the songwriting credits, as some former members of the band accused Kummerer of using parts they had written. Parts which according to them, Kummerer had promised to remove from the compositions.

Songwriting controversy or not, Obscura sound more or less like they have done since the release of their second album "Cosmogenesis" (2009). Technical death metal with a progressive edge, influenced by 80s/90s death metal acts like Death and Pestilence (the technical death metal albums by those artists) albeit appearing in a more contemporary skin and sound. Obscura have lifted the foot from the technical playing pedal though, and "A Sonication" overall sounds a bit more straight forward than what Obscura have released since "Cosmogenesis", although "A Valediction" also leaned that way. There are a lot of melodic death metal tendencies here too, and although Obscura have always been quite a melodic inclined technical/progressive metal act, they have increased the melodic death metal elements on "A Sonication". The vocals as usual vary between snarling raw vocals and deeper growling. There are occasionally some raw shouting and slightly more melodic tinged singing on the album too.

Although the material on the 8 tracks, 39:07 minutes long album is overall well written and the album features high level musicianship and a crisp, sharp, and detailed sound production, it´s still like something isn´t right. Obscura sound a bit tame and uninspired and "A Sonication" is an album lacking fire and passion. For a death metal release this is pretty limb, and although no one should ever expect to hear Suffocation or Cannibal Corpse brutality on an Obscura album, a bit more bite and intensity wouldn´t have hurt. It´s not a bad quality release, but it does sound a little sterile and lacking in energy. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is still deserved, but this seems like a crossroads for Obscura, and It´ll be interesting to see where they go from here.

OVERKILL Fuck You

EP · 1988 · Thrash Metal

"!!!Fuck You!!!" is an EP release by US thrash/speed metal act Overkill. The EP was released through Megaforce Records in late 1987. It bridges the gab between Overkill´s second- and third full-length studio albums "Taking Over" (1987) and "Under the Influence" (1988). "!!!Fuck You!!!" features 5 tracks and a total playing time of 22:08 minutes. The opening title track is a cover of the Canadian punk band, The Subhumans, while the remaining tracks are live versions of Overkill originals from Overkill´s first two studio albums "Feel the Fire" (1985) and "Taking Over" (1987). Two tracks from each album.

The title track is a flippant punk song with the speed metal snarling attitude of early Overkill. It´s entertaining enough, but when you have live versions of tracks like "Rotten to the Core" and "Hammerhead" to look forward to, it´s that part of the EP which is the most interesting. The live recordings are nicely energetic, raw, and authentic sounding with Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth talking to the audience (as he always does...) making sure they are a part of the experience. The sound quality is decent for the time, although it´s not a high level production job. Upon conclusion "!!!Fuck You!!!" is a good quality addition to your early Overkill collection and a 3 star (60%) rating is warranted.

BLUE ÖYSTER CULT Blue Öyster Cult

Album · 1972 · Hard Rock

"Blue Öyster Cult" is the eponymously titled debut full-length studio album by US hard rock act Blue Öyster Cult. The album was released through Columbia Records in January 1972. Blue Öyster Cult was formed in 1967 as Soft White Underbelly. The band name was changed a couple of more times until the band finally opted for the Blue Öyster Cult monicker in 1971. While the band initially was a psychedelic tinged rock act, they had adopted a more pure hard rock sound by the time of the release of the debut album.

It´s not the most hard edged hard rock released in 1972 though (this is not exactly Black Sabbath styled heaviness), as the music also features many classic rock elements and the presence of keyboards/piano also give the music a less hard rocking sound. When that is said Blue Öyster Cult is still a nicely hard rocking group (tracks like "Sceams" and "Workshop Of The Telescopes" are for example pretty heavy and hard rocking and a track like "She's As Beautiful As A Foot" features a dark and heavy atmosphere), and their blues rock rooted rock style is both effective and memorable. They can certainly write both hard rocking riffs and hook laden melodies.

Blue Öyster Cult is a well playing band too and lead vocalist/guitarist Eric Bloom has a strong voice and a passionate delivery. Featuring a powerful, organic, and detailed sound production, this debut album features both quality and promise, and Blue Öyster Cult were arguably off to the good start with this one. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.

SYMPHONY X Paradise Lost

Album · 2007 · Progressive Metal

"Paradise Lost" is the seventh full-length studio album by progressive/power metal act Symphony X. The album was released through Inside Out in June 2007. It´s the successor to "The Odyssey" from November 2002. The album was recorded over a longer period in 2006 and the release was delayed several times due to various issues (their studio was damaged by water, touring activities...etc.).

"Paradise Lost" is a concept release loosely based on John Milton's 1667 epic poem "Paradise Lost". It´s an epic poem which in large strokes tell the story of the war in heaven, Lucifer´s fall and banishment to hell, and how he as a serpent snake lured Adam and Eve into eating the forbidden fruit the from tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Stylistically the material on the 10 tracks, 61:03 minutes long album continues the darker, harder edged, and more heavy music style of "The Odyssey". The riffs are sharp, groove laden, and heavy, although guitarist Michael Romeo of course also plays more regular heavy/power metal riffs, and both neo-classical themes and blistering leads. In that respect Symphony X haven´t changed that much since the last album, and the listener is also treated to the occasional symphonic section, the neo-classical influenced keyboard playing of Michael Pinella, the strong playing rhyhtm section of drummer Jason Rullo and bassist Michael Lepond, and the worldclass vocal delivery of Russell Allen. In other words you don´t have to fear that there is a decrease in high level musicianship. These guys are as well playing/singing as ever.

"Paradise Lost" is produced by Romeo and the sound production further emphasize the heaviness of the tracks. This is certainly one of the most dark and heavy albums in the band´s discography (listen to "Set The World On Fire", "Seven", and "Domination" for proof of that). When that is said there are also many melodic moments, epic atmospheres, and other details which pull the music in a less heavy direction (which includes the power ballad title track and "The Sacrifice"), so upon conclusion "Paradise Lost" is overall not quite as heavy as it´s reputation and it´s still fans of progressive/power metal who are the main target group. I even heard a couple of hard/heavy rock vocal moments from Russel here and there (the vocals on tracks like "Serpent's Kiss" and "Eve Of Seduction" occasionally point in that direction), and it just speaks volumes of the skills of Symphony X the and the clever use of various musical elements which make up the album.

Symphony X found even more fame and recognition with the release of "Paradise Lost" and their upward curve just continued, and it´s easy to hear why that is. "Paradise Lost" is simply a high quality release through and through. High level musicianship, a powerful, heavy, and detailed sound production, and some memorable, varied, and effectful songwriting. A 4 - 4.5 star (85%) rating is deserved.

OVERKILL Overkill

EP · 1985 · Thrash Metal

"Overkill" is an eponymously titled EP release by US thrash/speed metal act Overkill. The EP was released through Azra Records/Metal Storm Records in July 1985. The band released the "Power in Black" in September 1983 and the material on this EP was originally recorded in November 1984 as a demo tape but short of cash, Overkill sold the material to Azra Records/Metal Storm Records who released the EP without Overkill´s further involvement. The band never received a dime for their efforts.

The EP features four tracks and a total playing time of 24:03 minutes. "Rotten to the Core" and "Overkill" would be re-recorded and included on Overkill´s debut full-length studio album "Feel the Fire" (1985) and "Fatal If Swallowed" was re-recorded and included on Overkill´s second full-length studio album "Taking Over" (1987). The only track which is exclusive to this EP is "The Answer". "The Answer" is an 8:49 minutes long track which is pretty heavy (almost doomy at times) and features a slightly progressive structured arrangement, while the other tracks are more immediate and louded with energy and power. Lead vocalist Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth distinct sounding voice and attitude filled delivery providing the material with something unique.

Compared to the recording quality of the "Power in Black" demo, these recordings sound professional, powerful, and detailed. For a late 1984 recording this actually has a very well sounding production, and the tracks are presented in the best possible light. This is upon conclusion a good quality EP release from Overkill and a great start to their label release career. A 3 star (60%) rating is warranted.
Probably my favorite Candlemass album.
It´s been a few years since I´ve listened to it last, but I remember it being a great album, which I think my review of it says too.

Just finished my review and I had to give this one a few more listens:https://www.metalmusicarchives.com/album/dream-theater/parasomniaI´m really not a big fan of Dream Theater anymore, other than the early releases which I still adore, but they always deliver quality material, even though it´s not my poison these days.
