Damn, were Manilla Road hot in the mid-1980s. The second of a run of classic albums kicked off by Crystal Logic, this is still straight up heavy metal - the thrash and proto-extreme metal aspects to their sound would emerge on The Deluge - but it's as dark and ugly as traditional heavy metal ever gets. Whereas Crystal Logic had its cheesier moments, Open the Gates is too downright terrifying to ever be mistaken for cheesy - the demons might come crawling out of your speakers at any moment when this is on. Truly one of the most sorely underrated bands of the 1980s, Open the Gates is probably the ideal place to start any exploration of Manilla Road's work.
