BLIND GUARDIAN Nightfall in Middle-Earth

Album · 1998 · Power Metal

If I were asked to name 3 best albums of Power Metal ever, my choice would be:

1. Blind Guardian 'Nightfall in Middle-Earth' (1998)

2. Gamma Ray 'Land of the Free' (1995)

3. Helloween 'Keeper of the 7 keys. Part 2' (1988)

'Nighfall in Middle-Earth' is Magnum Opus of Blind Guardian and an example that Power Metal does not necessarily mean 'Kindergarten Metal' which unfortunately can not be said about most of the bands playing mmusic in this style nowadays.

It will definetely take some time before you start to love this album. My first impression when I got it, was 'What a crap'. And now for me this album is Top 1.

MANOWAR Hail to England

Album · 1984 · US Power Metal

It is really strange to see how Metal Music Archives members underrate Manowar and its album 'Hail to England'.

In my opinion this is not only the best album in the history of Manowar, but absolute classics in terms of Heavy Metal and a must for every Heavy Metal fan.

'Hail to England' is devoted to British fans and in principle the music is rather European (I would even say German) than American.

Even after dozens of times listening to this album I can hardly find any drawback. Every song is breathing energy and the whole work is filled with the spirit of victory, glory and immortal Heavy Metal.

CRIMSON GLORY Transcendence

Album · 1988 · US Power Metal

It was also surprise for me to find Crimson Glory classified as Power Metal, although Power Metal fans would definetely love this album. I would agree with those who consider Crimson Glory to be one the first bands playing Progressive Metal, not to forget Fates Warning, of course.

'Eternal World' and 'Transcendence' sound progressive even according to modern definition of this style.

In the end, it is not so important which style of music it is. It is enough to say the album is simply brilliant. Midnight's vocal is outstanding, not to speak of other musicians work. 'Transcendence' is the best album of Crimson Glory and I am really sorry the band was not able to become successful.

ANNIHILATOR Alice in Hell

Album · 1989 · Thrash Metal

This is my first review for Metal Music Archives. Why I decided to start from Annihilator’s ‘Alice In Hell’? Maybe because it is has starts from letter ‘A’? Joking… To be serious for me it was the first thrash metal album which I was amazed of. It was long time ago, back in 1989 or 1990 when I had the luck to find this record. By that time I already had some idea about thrash, mainly based on Metallica/ Slayer / Megadeth, and I should say my attitude to thrash was then mainly negative…

And then came ‘Alice in Hell’… It was like a breath of fresh air. Even now 20 years later I see no other choice but to call it essential masterpiece.

5 stars.
