Helsingborg's BAI BANG evolved from the BOOGIE LIQUER BAND. This act adopted the new title of DOUBLE TROUBLE in 1983, releasing four singles and an album before changing their moniker yet again to BAI BANG. At this stage the band comprised vocalist Diddi Karstenholt, guitarist Eric MÃ¥nsson, bassist Claes Wallin, keyboard player Martyn Karlsson and drummer Mille Wendel. The first release as BAI BANG was the 1987 single 'Under Your Wings' on the Bozz label.

Wallin departed following the 1988 'Enemy Lines' album and in came replacement Mikael Persson. Within a year Wallin had reassumed his position in the band. The second album, 1991's 'Cop To Con', only saw a Japanese release on the Zero Corporation label. During 1993 ex-BAD HABIT guitarist Hal Johnston (a.k.a. Hal Marabel) joined the band in time to record the 'Little Child' single. Later the same year MÃ¥nsson walked, to be replaced by erstwhile NASTY IDOLS

BAI BANG Livin' My Dream

'Livin' My Dream' is the second album of Bai Bang after they're back again in 2009 and sixth album to date since 1988. This is a mix of early Bon Jovi style, sweetened up with Roxette's poppish hooks, and baked with Def Leppard harmonic vibe, so even though it's a new release, what you get here is basically an 80s formula, intended to bring back the nostalgic feel of the decade.

'We're United' elevates the mood with a fast-paced rhythm and it's effective to serve as the album opener. 'Livin' My Dream' intro reminds me to GNR's 'Chinese Democracy' and the chorus is highly addictive and packed with a neat guitar solo. 'Come On' and 'Tonight' are paying homage to Bon Jovi while 'Gonna Have It All' is a ballad that similar to Def Leppard's massive hit, 'When Love and Hate Collide'.

'Stay' is unique, they combine the New Wave attack on the rhythm, just like the debut, and twisted it with a beautiful melodic rock chorus. I love how it's done, risky but necessary to spice things up. 'Rock On' is slow, poppish, and shows the audience some nice harmonic vocal on the chorus while 'Rock It' (can't they find another title?) is a nice power ballad. 'Die For You' is awesome and one of the finest track on the second half.

Bad thing about this album is the poor production. It seems that AOR Heaven is giving a freedom for each of their bands to handle this part, but Bai Bang failed on this department. Lack of variety and extremely generic song titles might push away some potential listeners, but let me tell you this - if you're in it for a fun and familiar ride to the past, old hooks, old style, 'Livin' My Dream' won't disappoint.

80% and could have been better with a nicer sound output, shame on it, next time they should ask Dennis Ward or Chris Laney to help engineer the album!

Bai Bang is a Swedish glam act that's funnily released a new wave/disco feel debut, "Enemy Lines", in 1988 and then jumped ship to release a pop-metal/melodic rock album three years later. There are several good songs here such as the title track which had a nice commercial chorus, "Run To The End" which is a fantastic melodic rock piece, the semi-ballad "Heart's On Fire", and the best tune with catchy hooks and memorable chorus, "Arrow".

Diddi Kastenholt is a decent singer, his voice fits good with the band's music, however I found it seems his tone is too flat and doesn't really sings his heart out. Another infuriating factor is Mille Wendel's drumming pattern which is too formulaic and monotonous in each songs. It's like they're putting a drum machine there and this guy is definitely their weakest link.

If you like ballads or softer songs, "Code To Your Heart" actually has a nice and tender melody but too bad, Kastenholt's singing style is ironically the weakest one here. "Love Is Strong" is a thick 80s-feel heartmelting ballad and is one of their best as well. With couple of fillers such as "Adrenalin", "Strange Request", and their worst one, "Neat Time", I guess "Cop To Con" is a decent record, not a really horrible album, nice to buy only if you find it cheap, and strictly for glam/pop metal fans.
