DEEP PURPLE Machine Head

This is not, in my opinion, Deep Purple’s best album, but it is nonetheless a masterpiece. The album begins and ends with tracks that prove that simplicity is the art of design. Maybe I’m a Leo experiments with a more funky riff. Pictures of Home is a Deep Purple classic with a lovely bass solo that maybe one day I’ll be able to play. Never Before returns to a more funk-rock feel. Smoke on the Water is of course a classic and must have the most well known riff on the planet. It’s the song that sells the album. Lazy, though, is my favourite track on the album - a track that slowly builds.

NIRVANA Nevermind

Album · 1991 · Heavy Alternative Rock

OK so this is THE grunge album right. A masterpiece and yet even I can play some of the bass lines. But that’s the beauty of it. There is nothing complex about it, no virtuosity. But good composition and good performance are not always about all that are they. This album is a perfect example of everything falling into place, of the three members of the band being perfectly in balance. It will sound trite to say it I know but it is just so sad that despite the happiness that the songs Kurt Cobain wrote for this album have given to so many people, they did not make him happy enough.

TO-MERA Transcendental

Album · 2006 · Progressive Metal

I don’t think I have ever heard a metal band use dynamics to the extent that this band does on this album. At times they are very heavy metal, at others they are light classical or jazz. If prog metal is “characterised by genre transgression” then Transcendental has that in spades. The To-Mera musicians’ virtuosity is also beyond a doubt. I don’t usually like bands with female vocals as they tend to make it too gothic for me, but this is one of the rare exceptions. They don’t seem to fall into the gothic format. To-mera’s Transcendental is in my opinion a masterpiece of progressive metal.

DEATH Symbolic

Unfortunately I don’t like death metal. Initially I felt that this disqualified me from writing a review for this album. But the fact that Symbolic has risen to the top of the rankings has driven me to do so. I have honestly tried to listen to every track. I enjoy every one of them until the vocals start, which then spoil it for me. I really do not see the attraction of this type of vocal. I appreciate the instrumental composition and the skill level of the musicians but 80% of the album is unlistenable for me. This is why I can only give this one star.

NEAL MORSE Sola Scriptura

Album · 2007 · Metal Related

As a progressive metal fan and a Christian, Neal Morse has been an incredible recent discovery for me thanks to Prog Archives. I love both this album and “?”. Sola Scriptura has all the elements to satisfy my tastes. Throughout the album it is full of excellent composition both in terms of melodies and complex passages played by highly skilled musicians. It has sufficient heaviness in places and meaningful lyrics in others. I know that non-believers can find Neal’s lyrics overly evangelistic, but in the words that appear on this album, “How can I keep silent when I know the truth?”

Your reviews are a bit...lopsided, don'tcha think? Having 98% perfect of your reviews 5 stars only to be the last 2% be one stars is odd. I mean, you don't think one album deserves 4 stars? Also, as this site will never force someone to do a review, writing one about one of your one star albums would be appreciated. They are, after all, all in the site's top 10 and one may think you're being untruthful with these ratings.
