THE 3RD AND THE MORTAL picture
The 3rd and the Mortal is an experimental band from Trondheim, Norway since 1992. The band started out as a doom metal band mixing distorted guitars and heavy drumming with clean guitars and female vocals from Kari Rueslåtten. The band has since then experimented with genres such as ambient, progressive rock, jazz, electronica and trip-hop.

The 3rd and the Mortal were one of the forerunners of the atmospheric metal scene having been one of the first to have a leading female singer, they inspired bands such as The Gathering, Flowing Tears and Nightwish. Their first EP Sorrow was released in 1993 followed by the album Tears Laid in Earth in 1994. After Rueslåtten's departure in 1995 the band had Ann-Mari Edvardsen join as vocalist. With her the band released full length albums Painting on Glass in 1996 and explored an even more experimental sound in 1997 with In This Room.

Most consider this their least favourite of THE 3RD AND THE MORTAL's first three albums. I think it's because that Gothic vibe is all but gone and it does sound more modern. This one is experimental and we get some variety but it does retain that atmosphere and melancholy from the first two records. I never thought the number three could look creepy until i saw this album cover. I think you have to give them some credit for trying different things here though. The angular guitar melodies on "Sophisticated Vampires" is an example, or the screaming on "Did You". That spacey atmosphere on "The Wooden Lodge" is cool. "Hollow" is dark and creepy to start but each track seems to take us to a different place. I would recommend any of their first three recordings.

Without question this is an album that has influenced a lot of bands over the years. The first full length studio album from Norway's THE 3RD AND THE MORTAL featured female vocals with lots of atmosphere. When they decided to get heavy we got distorted low end guitars and heavy drums. For many this is where female fronted Gothic was born. The first track come across almost as Folk music with the focus on the vocals and we get more of that on the seventh track "Lengsel" but it's the rest of this album that is attractive to me. We even get an almost 19 minute closer called "Oceana" which is my favourite track on here. It opens and closes with the sounds of waves. "Shaman" is my second favourite while "Death Hymn" rounds out my top three. While i prefer their followup "Painting On Glass" this really is a must-have for those into the Gothic style.

THE 3RD AND THE MORTAL are a doomy, gothic sounding band out of Norway. This is their second release and probably my favourite. I love how experimental it is and all the different sounds that can be heard throughout. The trombone on that first track with that industrial rhythm is intersting. More horns on "Commemoration" with what sounds like static.Great sound when it kicks in with a heavy mid-paced groove.Vocals follow and we get mellotron too. "Persistant And Fleeting" is almost eerie with those background sounds as we get vocal melodies over top. When it kicks in i'm reminded of THE GATHERING. Nice. "White Waters" is brighter while "Azure" is a dark and powerful soundscape. There's a lot of variety on this record and man this is one album i can easily drift away to in my mind. Easily 4 stars and highly recommended.

At this point, 3rd and the Mortal had only the faintest connection with the style of gothic metal they had helped to inaugurate with their debut - oh, the female vocals, doomy riffs and other hallmarks of the genre are still there, but they're just one feature of a much more diverse smorgasboard of ingredients. Crammed with sonic experimentations and ambient textures, at points the album is reminiscent of the jazz-tinged soundscapes of the early post-rock scene, though 3rd and the Mortal have a very different approach to taking on those influences than exhibited by many subsequent post-metal bands. On the whole, this is gothic metal gone deliriously avant-garde, creating a brilliantly original sound in the process.
