Riot re-emerged after spending a while off the radar to put out this confident reunion album, ending their hiatus with a bang. Playing in a style which is mostly rooted in traditional heavy metal but works in aspects of the characteristically American style of power metal which was beginning to emerge at the time in response to the likes of Blind Guardian, it's a deliciously violent cross-section of Judas Priest-influenced mayhem which should satisfy fans of Metal Church and other American bands who proved that the US wasn't just about hair and glam metal back in the 1980s. Also the cover is one of the first of theirs not to feature that silly floofy dog thingy, which has got to be a plus.

I just want to point out some historical inaccuracies here:

1. I accept it's probably just a poor choice of words but Riot were never on hiatus before this album. They were split up, which is completely different in the music world (Regardless I agree that this is hell of a comeback release).

2. The big error here though is your comment about American power metal emerging in response to what Blind Guardian were doing, which is completely false. USPM had at least 4 or 5 years head start on the sound started by Helloween in 1987. Also bear in mind that this is a 1988 album, the same year as BG's debut, further cementing the point that USPM didn't emerge in response to BG. If anything, US power was the American response to the NWoBHM.

3. The 'silly floofy dog thingy' is actually a seal. His name is Johnny.
