Among Insects is the second release from Nociceptor. They play a brand of metalcore that relies mostly on palm-muted fretwork, or the djent playing style, that has become popularized by acts like Mehuggah. This album isn’t horrible, but on the other hand it won’t be the best album you’ll here this year. There are some flaws, such as the reliance of breakdowns and the dullness of the whole album, but if you enjoy this type of metalcore then this is a pretty good album.

The beginning of this album is very deceptive, at least to me. It started of with a really cool riff that is very melodic, and what I though was a good sign to come. But then it transferred to this dissonant chord that kept repeating itself over and over, and I was seriously stumped. Why ruin what was working very well? It soon dawned on me that the little bit in the beginning of the album was a fake teaser as soon as the vocals set in. A mixture of screams and growls their regular vocals definitely aren’t my cup of tea. Every now and then there are clean vocals, and those are pretty good, but they still don’t really make up for the rest of the album.

For metalcore Among Insects is pretty melodic, but the overall style of the album leaves some to be desired. I would love this album if they stuck to the more melodic sections of the album only, like the beginning. But, they insist on putting djent sections in there that really ruin the album for me. I was never a fan of djent flavored bands and this album furthers my dislike toward the genre. One thing for sure is that this album definitely isn’t a compromised, pop-metalcore album that’s cheesy as all get out. It’s definitely original, but the reliance on breakdowns isn’t really something that I look forward to in metal. After the 30 some odd minute playing time I find that the repeated riffs and breakdowns eventually make this album a bit dull for my liking. Though I didn’t enjoy the whole album there were some memorable parts on this album that made it some what enjoyable. For their descent effort, Nociceptor gets 3 stars.
