"Unholy Creations" is a compilation album by Swedish death metal act Sorcery. The compilation was released through To the Death Records in March 2011. Sorcery formed in 1986 and released several seminal Swedish death metal demos (including a rehearsal demo under the Sorcery's Malediction monicker) before being picked up by Underground Records for the release of their debut full-length studio album "Bloodchilling Tales" (August 1991). Sorcery subsequently put out the 1992 "Maculated" demo but eventually disbanding in 1997 without any further releases under their belts.

"Unholy Creations" includes the material from Sorcery´s three demo releases from the years 1987-1989, a couple of tracks from the January 1989 Sorcery's Malediction rehearsal demo, and the material from the 1992 "Maculated" demo. So it´s essentially all (or almost all) of the non-label material Sorcery released in the years 1987-1997, which have been included on this compilation. The material from the August 1990 "Rivers of the Dead" EP/Single and the material from "Bloodchilling Tales" have not been included here.

Other than the material from the "Maculated" demo, "Unholy Creations" shows the early blackened thrash/death metal sound of Sorcery. They didn´t become a pure death metal act before the release of "Rivers of the Dead", but prior to that they were still a pretty interesting, intense, and by 1989 accomplished blackened death/thrash metal act.

The material from the April 1987 "The Arrival" demo is pretty primitive blackened thrash/speed metal and an early example of Swedish extreme metal (I´d put this demo in the same catagory as the first Morbid release). By the time Sorcery released the early 1988 "Ancient Creation" demo, they had become much more extreme, relentlessly fast-paced, and aggressive. A high energy blackened death/thrash metal style performed by a band who had obviously honed their playing skills since the relatively primitive first demo.

They shortly changed their name to Sorcery's Malediction in late 1988/early 1989 and recorded a January 1989 rehearsal demo under that monicker, of which two tracks ("Obscure Beauty" and "Kill, Kill, Kill and Kill Again") appear on this compilation in the rehearsal versions. The three remaining tracks from the rehearsal demo appear here in the studio versions, which appeared on Sorcery´s fourth demo recording "Unholy Crusade" in August 1989. By that time the band had changed their name back to Sorcery again. The "Unholy Crusade" shows a more varied blackened death/thrash metal style with the band playing both furiously fast-paced and aggressive but also mid-paced and heavy.

The material from the 1992 "Maculated" demo is the most regular death metal sounding tracks featured on "Unholy Creations". Unfortunately they are relatively unremarkable tracks, which couldn´t live up to the quality of the material featured on "Bloodchilling Tales", which was probably one of the major factors in Sorcery not being able to secure a new recording contract and eventually disbanding in 1997.

As a compilation of the early non-label material from Sorcery/Sorcery´s Malediction, "Unholy Creations" does its job well. It´s a good introducton to the pre-death metal period of the band and a valid document of the development of the early Swedish death metal scene. A 3 star (60%) rating is warranted.

SORCERY Maculated

"Maculated" is the fifth demo recording by Swedish death metal act Sorcery. The demo was independently released in April 1992. It follows the release of Sorcery´s debut full-length studio album "Bloodchilling Tales" (August 1991). Sorcery weren´t able to immediately secure a new recording deal and therefore had to return to recording demos again to make themselves attractive to a new label.

Sorcery formed in 1986 and released several seminal Swedish death metal demos (including the rehearsal demo under the Sorcery's Malediction monicker) before being picked up by Underground Records for the release of their debut full-length studio album "Bloodchilling Tales". Sorcery subsequently put out this 1992 demo but eventually disbanding in 1997 without any further releases under their belts. All material from the demo is included on the 2011 "Unholy Creations" compilation album.

At the point of recording "Maculated", Sorcery probably just thought that having to return to recording a demo was just a little bump on the way, but as history shows that wasn´t the case. Judged by the quality of the material on the 4 tracks, 15:23 minutes long demo I´d say it´s understandable that Sorcery weren´t able to get a new recording contract. It´s not that this is bad quality material, but by 1992 the compitition on the old school death metal scene was huge and if you didn´t stick out the bigger labels had started to get picky.

Sorcery actually try out a few new things and make an effort to follow the times and they for example incorporate a couple of more groove laden death metal riffs and rhythms and the vocals are also more shouting and aggressive than growling here, leading the thoughts towards the forthcoming groove/death´n´roll direction of many of their peers. "Maculated" is still predominantly old school death metal though.

The demo features a decent sound production, but to my ears the whole project lacks power and intensity. It´s like Sorcery knew it was game over, but desperately tried to keep the kettle cooking although they had a feeling it would be fruitless. A 2.5 - 3 star (55%) rating is warranted.

SORCERY Rivers of the Dead

UMUR
"Rivers of the Dead" is an EP/single release by Swedish death metal act Sorcery. The EP/single was released through Thrash Records in August 1990. It follows the release of no less than three studio demos and a rehearsal demo released under the Sorcery´s Malediction monicker (all released between 1987 and 1989). "Rivers of the Dead" is Sorcery´s first label release and the last release prier to being picked up by Underground Records for the release of their debut full-length studio album "Bloodchilling Tales" (August 1991). Both tracks from this release were re-recorded and included on "Bloodchilling Tales".

Stylistically Sorcery are now heavier, more brutal and death metal leaning than on any of the previous releases by the band, where they predominantly played a blackened death/thrash metal style. It´s not wrong to say that they still do that here, but the heavier and darker production values provide the music with a more morbid and brutal death metal sound. The sound production is pretty murky and savage, but the unpolished nature of the production suits the rawness and brutality of the material well.

Upon conclusion "Rivers of the Dead" is a warts and all type of early death metal release. It came out almost simultaneously with the earliest label releases from artists like Entombed, Tiamat, and Grave, and it´s fans of the early releases of those artists who will be able to appreciate the sound of this release. A 3 star (60%) rating is warranted.

SORCERY Unholy Crusade

UMUR
"Unholy Crusade" is the fourth demo recording by Swedish death metal act Sorcery. The demo was independently released in August 1989. It´s the successor to the early 1988 "Ancient Creation" demo, although Sorcery did record a rehearsal demo in January 1989 which was released under the Sorcery's Malediction moniker. The Sorcery's Malediction rehearsal demo is not a widespread demo recording and very hard to find, but some of the tracks are included on the 2011 "Unholy Creations" compilation album, along with all the material from this demo.

Sorcery formed in 1986 and released several seminal Swedish death metal demos (including the rehearsal demo under the Sorcery's Malediction monicker) before being picked up by Underground Records for the release of their debut full-length studio album "Bloodchilling Tales" (August 1991). Sorcery subsequently put out the 1992 "Maculated" demo but eventually disbanding in 1997 without any further releases under their belts.

Stylistically "Unholy Crusade" shows a more mature Sorcery compared to the relentlessly fast-paced and fiercely aggressive material featured on the "Ancient Creation" demo. A less technically accomplished Morbid Angel isn´t the worst description. This is blackened death/thrash metal with both fast-paced and mid-paced heavy parts. The vocals are blackened snarling and if you´re only familiar with Sorcery through "Bloodchilling Tales" this sounds quite different from that album, and the two releases even share several tracks. Those tracks just sound vastly different in the subsequent studio album versions.

"Unholy Crusade" features a well sounding demo quality production job, and it´s overall a good quality demo recording from Sorcery. They have obviously honed their playing skills, their songwriting, and had access to a better recording facility and it pays dividends. A 3 - 3.5 star (65%) rating is warranted.

SORCERY Rehearsal

Demo · 1989 · Death Metal

UMUR
"Rehearsal" is the third demo recording by Swedish death metal act Sorcery. The demo was recorded in January 1989 and at that point Sorcery had shortly renamed the band Sorcery's Malediction. They would change their name back to Sorcery in time for the August 1989 release of their fourth demo "Unholy Crusade". You can find some of the tracks from this rehearsal demo on the 2011 "Unholy Creations" compilation album.

As the title suggests this is a rehearsal recording and it´s a relatively raw and unpolished release. You can still hear what´s going on though and Sorcery are a pretty well playing band considering that this is a live rehearsal room recording. Only "Obscure Beauty" and "Kill, Kill, Kill and Kill Again" are exclusive to this demo, as the three remaining tracks ("Count of Hades", "Dragons of the Burning Twilight", and "At the Rainbow's End") would all appear in re-recorded studio versions on "Unholy Crusade".

Stylistically this is relentlessly fast-paced, aggressive, and energetic blackened death/thrash metal with a raw snarling vocalist in front. At this point Sorcery (Sorcery's Malediction) were still in that proto-death metal territory where the music is probably better described as blackened thrash than pure death metal. A 2.5 star (50%) rating is warranted.
