Oysterhead was a short lived supergroup band that consisted of Primus bassist Les Claypool, Phish guitarist and singer Trey Anastasio, and The Police drummer Stewart Copeland formed in 2000. The vocals were sung by both Claypool and Anastasio.

The style of the band revolved a wide variety of genres, including funk metal, eclectic rock, alternative rock, psychedelic, and hard rock, among other things. On May 4, 2000, the banded intended to be a one hit show at the New Orleans Saenger Theatre. Tickets prices were raised up to $2,000, but the band still got a large amount of sales.

Oysterhead only released a single album, titled "The Grand Pecking Order", released in 2001. In New Orleans, the band had only played four tracks they'd compiled strictly for the live event. However, with the comeuppance of the release, they added nine songs and included the original four as well on their

Two things come to mind when I hear this sole album by OYSTERHEAD.

1) Buckethead. The album title as well as some of the song structures from the 'Monsters and Robots' album which Les Claypool was a part of.

2) Fishbone. Funkiness and bass lines at moments.

Well I also hear lots of Phish and Primus. This is a worthy effort from Les Claypool, Trey Anastasio and Stewart Copeland but they don't seem to bring anything dynamically new to the table.

I'm hearing a lot of borrowing from other sources including previous incarnations of all members involved but hardly anything that makes this a dynamic stand alone release.

That being said, this is an ok collaboration between these three outstanding musicians. I just wish it was a bit more adventurous. Instead of everyone bringing out the best in each other, it seems more like everyone is watered down. I guess even supergroups need an album to warm up.

3 stars nothing more.
