LACRIMOSA picture
Lacrimosa is a duo led by German-born Tilo Wolff, the main composer, and Finnish Anne Nurmi, currently based in Switzerland and founded in 1990. Lacrimosa's musical genre originally was darkwave or rather downright gothic, with occasional metal elements. Since Inferno, their style has shifted much more towards gothic metal. Their musical style mixes heavy metal and gothic rock sounds along with violin, trumpet and more classical instruments, although their musical development throughout the years has also led to changes in instrumentation. Lacrimosa's lyrics are written almost exclusively in German, although since the 1995 album Inferno every album has featured one or two songs in English, generally written by Anne Nurmi. Finnish has also appeared in brief spoken intros to two songs (Schakal on Inferno and The Turning Point on Elodia) and on a bonus track in a limited edition release of Fassade. Their lyrics are mainly about loneliness, sadness, darkness, read more...

LACRIMOSA Reviews

LACRIMOSA Stille

I always find Lacrimosa's albums a decidedly hit-or-miss proposition, and Stille is a perfect example of this; coming out a couple of years after Inferno, which perhaps is my favourite Lacrimosa release, I find that it adopts a grandiose pomposity not justified by the gravitas of the music offered. The vocals present don't quite attain the operatic quality they're groping towards, the classical and metal influences are both drab and fail to grab the listener's attention, and on the whole the music seems sparse and minimalistic where it really cries out to be rich, lush and baroque. In short, it seems to consistently fall short of the standard it sets for itself.

LACRIMOSA Satura

Satura represents the point where Lacrimosa begin to incorporate metal into their sound, but - alas - they hadn't yet learned how to do it interestingly. Some fairly basic riffs are offered to spice up their sound but the overall effect is flat and unimpressive. This is in stark contrast to the far more successful darkwave/metal mashup they hit on in Inferno. Once again, Lacrimosa prove to be a decidedly hit-or-miss band, with their shaky quality control here resulting in an album which feels as though it's constantly just about to really let loose but never quite gets around to it. Not recommended.

LACRIMOSA Lichtgestalt

Yet another offering from Tilo Wolff's maddeningly inconsistent gothic metal project, Lichtgestalt is one of those Lacrimosa albums which feels like it's trying too hard. The classical bits and string sections are cliched and kind of dull, the metal parts are cliched and kind of dull. That isn't necessarily fatal, because when Lacrimosa are on form they can put together trite classical and trite metal and come up with a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts, but that sadly isn't the case this time around. The only novelty here are the painful attempts at metallic growls, which are just kind of embarrassing all round.

LACRIMOSA Echos

Lacrimosa's Echos represents something of a return to form after rather uninspiring efforts like the unaccountably popular Elodia and the somewhat drab Fassade. Part of the secret of the album's success is in the subtle change of emphasis in the classical influences at work. Whilst previously the classical elements had been incorporated in a symphonic, orchestral fashion, here the compositions are more along the lines of chamber music, a subtle change which makes all the difference in reconciling the gothic and classical-influenced metal sides of the band's sound and creating an atmosphere suited to the band's aims. Like the ship on the cover, Lacrimosa had been sailing through choppy waters prior to this and was almost wrecked, but here they find their way back to smooth sailing. It might not be a classic, but it's pleasant enough.

LACRIMOSA Fassade

Gothic music is a fragile thing. The whole affair lives or dies on the strength of the atmosphere and mood evoked by the music and, as in so many other genres of music, it is imperative that that atmosphere feels natural and sincere. If the mood of a piece feels artificial, stilted, forced or otherwise false in some respect, and if you don't have some intriguingly original or clever compositional or technical tricks to maintain interest, it all rather falls to pieces.

Such is the case with Lacrimosa's Fassade. Compositionally speaking, the music on here just isn't very interesting, consisting of rather bland rock music with the occasional metallic riff and orchestral elements constituting the album's attempt to win over a symphonic/gothic metal audience. However, those who have heard albums such as Inferno from Lacrimosa know what the real deal tastes like, and Fassade doesn't even pass muster as a faint imitation of the band's better work. To put it simply, it feels as though Lacrimosa are simply going through the motions here and are trying to hide it with a few production flourishes and extra boobs in the cover art. Nobody's fooled, guys.
