CLAUSTROFOBIA picture
Claustrofobia started in 1996, in Leme – a satellite city of São Paulo, Brazil. Over the last 11 years, the band has successfully conquered its grounds on the scene, becoming the most important Thrash/Hardcore/Death Metal band of the Brazilian underground, with avid and loyal fans across the country. The band had been playing with unmistakable attitude and energy at many concerts all over Brazil and Europe, sharing the stage with consecrated bands on the international scene, such as Soulfly, Destruction, Napalm Death, Vader, Krisiun, Hate Eternal, Ratos de Porão, Paul Di Anno and Sepultura. It is also one of the rare underground bands breaking through to important TV programs showcasing heavy music, an unusual fact for musicians from the Brazilian metal scene. The band is young yet experienced, celebrating its 11th anniversary this year with the original line-up.

Peste, the most recent album of Claustrofobia bring some surprises: the first is the track Nota 6.66. This is an instrumental 7 minute song, where Claustrofobia mix thrash metal with the brazilian percussion traditionally used on samba music! They were helped by the guys from Batuque de Corda, a group of percussion. The results are great, this track is all that Sepultura ever tried to do since Roots! There's even a cuíca solo! Don't expect any prog or avant-garde here, it's fast and violent thrash perfectly blended with samba.

Another surprise are the lyrics, all sung in portuguese. This is a welcomed to me, but don't worry if you are from a non-lusofone country: the songs in this album have enough brutality to delight all the thrashers around the world.

The drumming of Caio D'Angelo has improved greatly since their debut. The addition of a second guitar is also welcomed, bringing some subtleties to their sound. Sure, it's needed some listens to note these subtleties below the virulence of the sound!

The lyrics deal with personal and social struggles, a common theme in thrash metal. Peste is probably the best album of Claustrofobia. Check it out!

First album of this brazilian band.

I was expecting a bad production here, but no, it's quite a good production for an independent release and the first of a band. As usual, the only bad point in the recording is the drums sound, which, I'm used to it, drums it's hard to get a good sound, at least it seems like that.

The highlight on the record are the vocals by Marcus D´Angelo who also plays guitar.

The sound in this first record, released in 2000 is pretty much based on the Sepultura's Max Cavalera era. In fact, A LOT of their sound can be found in here. Some Korzus as well, including Marcello Pompeu from Korzus, as a special guest on one track.

Vocals both in english and portuguese, a good combination, some feeling, some technic.

It was the first album I've heard from the band, and I'm looking forward to listen the other ones, cause if they follow the same path, with a better production and get rid from all that Sepultura background, the next records must be very very good.
