Tightening up the fuzzy miasma of noise rock into fully devolved hardcore punk numbers realised though building blocks of noise, Big Black's Atomizer buzzes like an irritated wasp through an epochal collection of songs. Masterful musical evocations of furious tension such as Kerosene, during which you really can believe that Steve Albini is going to snap and set fire to himself, make this a brilliantly uncomfortable listen. Steeped in the most uncomfortable end of the hardcore scene, if Black Flag is like a sonic punch in the face, this is more like being woken up in the middle of the night by a threatening phone call where someone explains how he's going to blow up your entire home town set to an aggressive industrial howl.
