When Black Masses took a while to grow on me I was worried that Electric Wizard had gone off their game, but Time to Die is a welcome return to form. It feels like the band have stepped back from some of the heavy psych influences that had been cropping up into their post-Dopethrone albums and have instead tapped into a thick, dark stream of gruesome doom metal that seems to show a little influence from their fellow doom-merchants Church of Misery.

The choice of subject matter is Ricky Kasso, whose murder of a teen friend of his at the height of the media panic about satanic influences in heavy metal and tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons makes him perfect fodder for Electric Wizard's particular brand of creativity. With an reiteration of the iconic "When you get into one of these trips..." sample used to such good effect earlier in Electric Wizard's back catalogue rounding out the album, this is the Wizard in top form.
