Symphonic metal compositions, female vocals, goth-lite atmosphere, keyboards and guitar tussling over who can showboat the most. Anyone who dabbles in symphonic metal has heard a lot of this stuff plenty of times already, and for my part I find Within Temptation's take on this basic blueprint to be not quite worth the effort. It's technically flashy, sure, but there's a cynicism to it too; it feels like the band are just ticking boxes off on a checklist and expect me to respond accordingly as a listener, which is something which usually makes me feel hostile and disinclined to co-operate. That's certainly the case here.
