"The Scythe of Cosmic Chaos" is the third full-length studio album by German death metal act Sulphur Aeon. The album was released through Ván Records in December 2018. It´s the successor to "Gateway to the Antisphere" from April 2015. Since the release of the predecessor Sulphur Aeon have gone from being a trio to being a quintet. I can´t mention the names of the new guys in the lineup here though, as all bandmembers work under pseudonyms like T., M., and A.

Sulphur Aeon have crafted another chaotic sounding (although less than before) and technically well played blackened death metal album with "The Scythe of Cosmic Chaos" and fans of the two previous releases will find loads to enjoy here. They haven´t stagnated though, which is obvious already from opening track "Cult of Starry Wisdom" which features deep register clean vocals (somewhere between the odd clean vocals of Carl-Michael Eide from Virus and the clean vocals by David Vincent from Morbid Angel). The pace has generally been lowered too, and there are less furiously fast-paced blasting parts on this album compared to the two previous album releases. This means that "The Scythe of Cosmic Chaos" is a less chaotic sounding album, and also a much more dynamic and memorable release. It´s simply a more accessible listen. Sulphur Aeon still occasionally pummel the listener with a high level brutality, but this is generally very sophisticated music featuring clever dual guitar work, intricate and powerful riffs, diverse vocals (both growling, blackened screaming, and the above mentioned clean vocals), and some pretty varied and technical drumming.

"The Scythe of Cosmic Chaos" features a clearly defined, powerful, and brutal sounding production job, which suits the music perfectly. To my ears Sulphur Aeon have developed and challenged themselves and their audience, and they´ve upped their game with this album. A 4 star (80%) rating is deserved.
