The second Bathory album is another brief burst of aggressive, lo-fi black metal in which mastermind Quorthon explores the sonic possibilities of the fast-paced, thrashy guitar and low production values of early Venom taken to an extreme. Where Venom's debut a harsh, cold aesthetic through poor production by accident, Bathory steer towards this on purpose, and in doing so redefine the very parameters of metal. This time around, the album builds up wonderfully to the anthemic closing track The Return - or to give it the full title, The Return of the Darkness and Evil. Darkness and evil have never founded so fun as when Quorthon is in charge.
