"The Archaic Abattoir" is the 4th full-length studio album by Belgian death metal act Aborted. The album was released through Listenable Records in April 2005. Over the course of the first three Aborted albums the band have developed their style from initially playing gore themed deathgrind to playing brutal death metal with goregrind elements.

While the music on "The Archaic Abattoir" is at it´s core still brutal death metal with goregrind elements, just like the music style on the three predecessors, Aborted have incorporated loads of melodic tinged guitar solos and catchy memorable riffs to their core sound, which make "The Archaic Abattoir" a more accessible and intriguing album than the earlier releases by the band. "The Archaic Abattoir" was simply the most varied release by Aborted at this point, and they greatly prospered from that with generally positive reviews and fan responses. Lead vocalist Sven de Caluwé uses two different vocal styles on the album. One deep growling vocal style and one higher pitched and fiercely aggressive vocal style. Not completely unlike the vocal styles on "Necroticism-Descanting the Insalubrious (1991)" by Carcass. The tempo varies between fast and blasting but there are mid-paced groove based sections too. The gory lyrical themes haven´t changed much and we´re still met with songtitles like "The Gangrenous Epitaph", "Voracious Haemoglobinic Syndrome" and "Gestated Rabidity". Of course the gory cover artwork also gives the blood soaked and vile themes away.

The album has a full playing time of 36:26 minutes and that´s perfect for this kind of music. The 10 tracks on the album all deliver relentless brutality, aggressive vocals, and what´s probably most important, hooks to help you remember the tracks. "The Archaic Abattoir" might take a few listens to sink in, but once it does the tracks begin to stand out from each other and you´ll start recognising details and intriguing ideas in the tracks. So it´s not too easy to digest but still accessible enough to leave a lasting impression. "The Archaic Abattoir" deserves a 4 star (80%) rating and if you are interested in an introduction to Aborted, I can highly recommend that you start here.
