"Souls of Purity" is the first demo recording by Danish death metal act Mordor. The demo was independently released in 1993. Mordor formed in 1992 and released this demo and subsequently the "Labyrinths of Horror" full-length studio album. The latter did however not see an official release (cassette tape demo copies exist) until after Mordor had changed their name to Exmortem. "Labyrinths of Horror" was subsequently released as Exmortem´s debut full-length studio album in June 1995.

"Souls of Purity" features 4 tracks and a total playing time of 16:11 minutes. Only "In Command" was re-recorded and included on "Labyrinths of Horror". The three remaining tracks are exclusive to this demo. Stylistically it would be a lie calling Mordor a particularly unique sounding death metal act. This is old school death metal with both thrashy tendencies, but also a high level of brutality. There´s only one guitarist in the band and maybe as a result, there are no leads or harmonies found here. Just powerful, brutal, and raw riffing and heavy drumming. Lead vocalist Søren Lønne (who would have a short stint with Panzerchrist in 2013) performs both brutal growling but also the occasional higher pitched screaming/snarling vocal part.

The demo is well produced and you can clearly hear all instruments and vocals in the mix. There is the right dark and morbid sound to it though, so this is not a sterile polished sound production. Upon conclusion "Souls of Purity" is a good quality demo recording from Mordor, but to my ears there is a feeling that the songs sound too much the same. There isn´t much variation within or between tracks (which could be a consequence of the lack of lead guitars), but I still appreciate the brutality and intense delivery of the music. A 3 star (60%) rating is warranted.
