Sacrimony is a 2012 single release from US (well, pretty much multi-national these days) power metal act Kamelot. The song, which carries the full title of Sacrimony (Angel of Afterlife) is the first song released from the group’s as yet upcoming tenth studio album, entitled Silverthorn. The song is also the first released to feature the vocals of new vocalist Tommy Karevik (Seventh Wonder). Two female singers also guest in the song, Elize Ryd (Amaranthe) and Alissa White-Gluz (The Agonist). The latter is actually the designated growling vocalist for the upcoming album.

I don’t normally bother to review singles. Why bother wasting words that could probably go in a later album review just as well? You see the thing is I wasn’t going to bother, but ultimately decided to make an exception for Sacrimony and consider this something of a teaser review, since if the album lives up to this song’s standard, which is epic and addictive, then we’ll all be in for a treat come late October when the album drops.

Sacrimony has Kamelot returning to a more power metal based sound after the experimental Poetry for the Poisoned (2010). The song is highly symphonic and puts me most in mind of the band’s older sound pre-Ghost Opera (2007), although it turns progressive for the solo section. Tommy Karevik only needed this one song to prove that he was the man to replace Roy Khan. His vocals are pretty much perfect and his voice works well with that of Elize Ryd. The song ends quite ominously though, the sort of thing you know is going to lead into something, but into what? I don’t know, but I can’t wait for Silverthorn now to find out. It’s only one song, but Sacrimony is pretty much worthy of a perfect score. Welcome back Kamelot.
