"Observing Oblivion" is the third full-length studio album by German death metal act Dead Eyed Sleeper. The album was released through Supreme Chaos Records in February 2011. It´s the successor to "Through Forests of Nonentities" from 2009.

When listening to the furiously fast-paced brutality of album opener "Annihilation of Opposites" it´s interesting to note that Dead Eyed Sleeper have gone for a more technical and brutal death metal sound on "Observing Oblivion" compared to the progressive inclined death metal style on "Through Forests of Nonentities". "Observing Oblivion" is still an adventurous release and Dead Eyed Sleeper have more cards up their sleeves than playing fast-paced technical death metal, but I can´t help feeling a little confused about their musical development on their first three albums. Quality wise there´s nothing to blame these guys for. They are all high level musicians, their songwriting is powerful, intriguing, and intense, and "Observing Oblivion" also features a very well sounding production job, which further enhances the complexity and the brutality of the material.

So why doesn´t "Observing Oblivion" deserve the highest ratings? Well...Dead Eyed Sleeper aren´t particularly original. Most of the things they play have been heard before, and for all their great songwriting ideas, some of their tracks still lack memorability. I know it´s pretty harsh obvervations, and it shouldn´t be misinterpreted as if "Observing Oblivion" isn´t a high quality release, because it certainly is and to those who like their death metal to be a little more adventurous than the average release in the style, this is definitely a recommended listen. A 3.5 - 4 star (75%) rating is deserved.
