"Obscuritatem Advoco Amplectère Me" is the debut full-length studio album by Swedish noise/drone/black metal act Abruptum. The album was released through Deathlike Silence Productions in March 1993. Abruptum was formed in 1989 by IT (vocals) and All (guitars, drums, noises) but after the release of the "Evil" EP in 1991, All was replaced by Evil (real name Morgan Håkansson who is also known for his prominent role in prolific Swedish black metal act Marduk).

Although there are definitely some black metal aestethics to "Obscuritatem Advoco Amplectère Me", the music on the album is only related to black metal, and is better described as an avant-garde, industrial tinged, blackened noise/drone type of music. "Obscuritatem Advoco Amplectère Me" features two 25 minutes long tracks. It´s bleak, dark, and raw atmospheric music. There´s an eerie unpleasant mood to the release which gives the listener the same uneasy feeling you get while watching a torture horror movie (movies like "Hostel" and "Martyrs"). You don´t really want to watch/listen, but you still can´t help yourself because of a morbid fascination of the macabre and gruesome.

The tracks appear to have little structure and my guess would be that they were created on the spot in the studio, with the various sections of the tracks being recorded as improvisations and then put together later. You certainly don´t get the feeling that Abruptum came to the studio with anything but a couple of undefined ideas to how the album should sound. In that respect they´ve managed to produce a decent release. It´s a hard listen though and I suspect not many listeners will have the stamina to sit through all 50:59 minutes of this sonic noise attack. The tortured screaming/blackened snarling is a test in itself, but the constant changes, lack of structure, and noises will be a hard sell to most people.

"Obscuritatem Advoco Amplectère Me" is a legendary release in this odd underground genre of music, and considering the date of release, I can get behind that, although experimental noise rock had been produced already from the late 60s/early 70s. Abruptum just take it a bit further to more extreme territories. Your opinion on a release like this can´t help but being a subjective one. It´s a hard release to rate from a purely objective point of view, because either you can appreciate (and maybe even enjoy...you sicko...) the bleak and tortured noise that Abruptum produce or otherwise you´ll run away screaming...I´m afraid I mostly belong to the latter catagory. This is simply painful to the ears. A 2 star (40%) rating is warranted.
