Satyricon's third album perfects the approach of the band's early work, unleashing a tidal wave of black metal riffage (quite well produced, this time around!) with the occasional interjection from Gerlioz' synthesisers or piano as a counterpoint. It's not that they do anything particularly differently from the way they did it on Dark Medieval Times or The Shadowthrone - it's just that this time around they do it so much better, with an energy and enthusiasm which is truly intoxicating. Fenriz of Darkthrone was fond enough of the band to contribute lyrics to Du Som Hater Gud - and whilst the dude's judgement has occasionally been questionable in the past, this time he's picked folks worthy of tribute.

Well, there's 10 black metal albums in the top 100 so considering that we've got 20 subgenres on the charts (counting NWoBHM) the subgenre is still punching above its weight. ;)
