"Maculated" is the fifth demo recording by Swedish death metal act Sorcery. The demo was independently released in April 1992. It follows the release of Sorcery´s debut full-length studio album "Bloodchilling Tales" (August 1991). Sorcery weren´t able to immediately secure a new recording deal and therefore had to return to recording demos again to make themselves attractive to a new label.

Sorcery formed in 1986 and released several seminal Swedish death metal demos (including the rehearsal demo under the Sorcery's Malediction monicker) before being picked up by Underground Records for the release of their debut full-length studio album "Bloodchilling Tales". Sorcery subsequently put out this 1992 demo but eventually disbanding in 1997 without any further releases under their belts. All material from the demo is included on the 2011 "Unholy Creations" compilation album.

At the point of recording "Maculated", Sorcery probably just thought that having to return to recording a demo was just a little bump on the way, but as history shows that wasn´t the case. Judged by the quality of the material on the 4 tracks, 15:23 minutes long demo I´d say it´s understandable that Sorcery weren´t able to get a new recording contract. It´s not that this is bad quality material, but by 1992 the compitition on the old school death metal scene was huge and if you didn´t stick out the bigger labels had started to get picky.

Sorcery actually try out a few new things and make an effort to follow the times and they for example incorporate a couple of more groove laden death metal riffs and rhythms and the vocals are also more shouting and aggressive than growling here, leading the thoughts towards the forthcoming groove/death´n´roll direction of many of their peers. "Maculated" is still predominantly old school death metal though.

The demo features a decent sound production, but to my ears the whole project lacks power and intensity. It´s like Sorcery knew it was game over, but desperately tried to keep the kettle cooking although they had a feeling it would be fruitless. A 2.5 - 3 star (55%) rating is warranted.
