A crucial (if somewhat rudimentary) blueprint for the "Peaceville" sound of death-doom metal which Paradise Lost and their labelmates Anathema and My Dying Bride would become primarily associated with. Lost Paradise has somehow clicked with me after a long while during which I didn't really "get" it, or its associated style. At the end of the day the innovation is really a simple one - take the slow sound of doom metal, use death metal growls and production aesthetics to make it sound dirty and dilapidated - but you have to admit it's a pretty effective idea, and whilst the individual performances here aren't much to write home about the overall atmosphere evoked of grim, quasi-gothic gloom is effective enough to hold the album together.
