"Labyrinths Of Horror" is the debut full-length studio album by Danish death metal act Exmortem. The album was released through Euphonious Records in June 1995. Exmorten formed in 1992 under the Mordor monicker and released the 1993 "Souls of Purity" demo before changing their name to Exmortem in 1994. Prior to changing their name Mordor recorded and prepared "Labyrinths Of Horror" for release (cassette tape copies of the Mordor version exist) but they opted to change their name and wait until they could properly release the album under the Exmortem monicker. There has been one lineup change since the "Souls of Purity" demo as bassist Mads Weng has left and lead vocalist Søren Lønne has taken over the bass duites in addition to singing.

Stylistically Exmortem continue the intense, relentlessly brutal, and powerful death metal style of the Mordor demo, and Lønne now makes better use of his screaming/snarling vocal style in addition to this brutal growling. The vocal style on the first Konkhra album isn´t far off the mark when trying to describe how the vocals sound on "Labyrinths Of Horror". Musically Konkhra are slightly more sophisticated though, and Exmortem predominantly go straight for the jugular throughout the 9 tracks, 29:38 minutes long album. Not that "Labyrinths Of Horror" is a bad quality release or it becomes a tedious listen, but there is a tendency for the material to sound a bit one-dimensional. The lack of any form of lead guitar work (no solos, harmonies or anything else to spice things up) makes it a bit hard to tell the tracks apart.

"Labyrinths Of Horror" features a pummeling, raw, and brutal sounding production job, which suits the equally abrasive material well. There is definitely good synergy here between the sound production values and the music. Exmortem are well playing too and upon conclusion "Labyrinths Of Horror" is a good quality debut release from Exmortem. I wouldn´t call it a standout release on the Danish (or the international) death metal scene, but less will do and it´s an enjoyable album while it plays. A 3 - 3.5 star (65%) rating is warranted.
