If you think about it, bestial vocals in metal have the capability to be great equalisers. Take this debut album from Derkéta, an all-female death metal band who've been around for decades but haven't brought together a full album until now. The next time you catch someone assuming that female vocals in metal automatically equate to clean vocals thrown in to add a pretty air to a song, have them listen to some of Sharon Bascovsky's absolutely grotesque growls on here. A collection of old school death metal compositions done right, In Death We Meet is a terrifying encounter which convinces me that Derkéta may be death metal's most criminally underrated band.
